"The Rangers' roster is far from settled.

The NHL deadline for complying with the $59.4 million salary cap is today at 3 p.m. and the Rangers were about $1 million under on Tuesday with 23 players, not including the injured Chris Drury (left index finger) and Vinny Prospal (right knee inflammation).

But the Rangers placed forwards Todd White ($2.375 million) and Tim Kennedy ($550,000) on waivers, likely in advance of a roster move today.

"It's not complicated," general manager Glen Sather said. "It just gives us some options in case somebody becomes available in the next day or two we can use."

Coach John Tortorella said neither Kennedy nor White, skating as spares in practice this week as the Rangers prepare for Saturday's season opener at Buffalo, would be sent to Hartford (AHL) if they clear waivers by noon today.

The Rangers still have needs, including a top-line center, though Tortorella said Erik Christensen would start the season between Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov, and a left-shooting defensemen since five of the seven defensemen currently on the roster are right-handed shots.

However, Sather said nobody on the waiver wire Tuesday intrigued him, though he expects some more talented players to be available today as teams try to meet the cap. Sather also characterized the trade market as teams looking to unload bad contracts.

"A bad contract in somebody's mind might not be a bad contract to somebody else," Sather said."
