"As scripts go, does it get any better than this?

One of the Edmonton Oiler cherubs, Jordan Eberle, scores his first NHL goal with a swash-buckling toe-drag around defenceman Ian White, then a ho-hum backhand past the estimable Miikka Kiprusoff, and sets up the new captain Shawn Horcoff.

Then the oldest guy on the ice, Nikolai Khabibulin, pitches his first Oilers shutout, 42nd on his career resume, if you're counting.

In a thundering final chapter, the super-heavy Steve MacIntyre decks Raitis Ivanans with an overhand right that had Ivanans wondering if the Latvian was back in Rig.

Add it up, and the New Era Oilers come up with a new result, an actual win over the Calgary Flames, 4-0 in Thursday's season opener at Rexall Place, after losing all six games in the provincial rivalry last year.

"It was only one game but I think the fans got a glimpse of the future tonight," said Horcoff, who played with the baby-faced Eberle and the prize 18-year-old Taylor Hall throughout the good-to-the-last-drop night.

"The Battle of Alberta ... a great fight. I don't know if we had an area where we let down. Impressive. We're trying to build something here through hard work.""
