"The Buffalo Sabres braced for the worst, hoped and prayed for the best as right winger Jason Pominville lay motionless on the ice with medical personnel surrounding him and a stretcher on its way. The longtime fan favorite had suffered a head-rattling hit from behind just 14 minutes into the game, with fans in HSBC Arena just as quiet and nervous as the players on the ice.

The health prognosis came somewhere between best- and worst-case scenario. Pominville suffered a concussion and a gash above his eye that required seven or eight stitches, but he was sitting up and talking well before his teammates finished a 4-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.

For the players who saw their friend in obvious trouble, the news he was moving and conversing came as a welcome relief, though they were still unsettled by the situation.

"It was a little tough seeing him laying there," said Sabres center Derek Roy, who rested on one knee by Pominville's side. "Some guys here have known him for nine, 10 years. He battles hard every night, and it's tough to see anybody in the position."

The right winger avoided a trip to the hospital despite a scene that had two doctors, two ambulance workers and an athletic trainer attending to the player after a blindside hit by Chicago's Nicklas Hjalmarsson.

"He's doing OK," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "We seemed a little stunned for a little while. Pommer's really been our ironman. That this is somebody laying there, you're just thinking and praying that everything's going to be OK."

The injury came as Pominville positioned himself along the right boards and faced his own goal line as defenseman Andrej Sekera came out with the puck. Pominville glanced to his right to see if any opponents were coming, then readied himself for Sekera's pass.

Hjalmarsson arrived before the puck. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Swede skated in from the blue line and, with his left leg in the air, threw his body into Pominville, landing on the 9 of the 29 on Pominville's back. The winger's left side bounced heavily into the boards, and his head whiplashed off the glass."

I'm sure Jason will be fine, he didn't need to leave the arena thankfully.
