Mexico will take on Bosnia-Herzegovina on Feb. 9 at Georgia Dome
    [IMG]

Tri fans in Atlanta, mark your calendars for Feb. 9. The Mexican national soccer team is coming to town to kick off their 2011 US Tour and 2014 World Cup cycle against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The match – to be played in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome at 8 p.m. ET – will mark El Tri’s second-ever visit to Atlanta.

“What better way to start this new cycle of the Mexican national team,” said Mexican soccer federation general secretary Decio de María in a statement. "I'm sure the fans will enjoy this important event, because it means the beginning of our preparation for the 2011 sports competitions, such as Copa America and Gold Cup, and the start of the World Cup qualifiers.”

Mexico top Bosnia in de la Torre's coaching debut
    [IMG]
Corona solid in goal as Tri take advantage of errors to win 2-0

A blooper goal and a highlight reel of saves from Jesús Corona led Mexico past Bosnia 2-0 on Wednesday night in front of 50,507 in Atlanta's Georgia Dome to give new Tri coach José Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre a win in his first game at the helm.

The tallies came by way of a Miralem Pjanic own-goal in the 47th minute and Édgar Iván Pacheco in the 55th.

The first half was full of action and marked by good chances and great interventions from both ‘keepers. Six minutes in, Pacheco surprised the Bosnian defense with a quick chip off a set piece to Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, who failed to slot home with just Kenan Hasagic to beat.

Mexican clubs break away from FMF
    and form independent league

There have been several proposed changes to the Mexican league, which will format itself to be much like the English Premier League.
Representatives of all 18 first-division teams in Mexico decided unanimously to break away from the FMF and persue an independent league styled after the English Premier League.

FMF general secretary Decio de Maria has been named the league's commissioner.

The new independent league - Liga MX dubbed "Liga Premier" by the local media - has proposed many changes from the older format. Similar to England's Barclays Premier League, the Mexican league is looking to have a designated sponsor. Expanding the league from 18 to 20 will also be strongly considered.

The relegation system, which currently sees the last six tournaments taken into account in order to demote a team, will be revised under the new proposal. Also a 0-0 draw would yield zero points for involved teams, a 1-1 draw would equal one point for each, and a 2-2 tie and beyond would be two points.

The Copa México is a Mexican football cup competition that existed from 1907 to 1997, and being restored on 2012. It will be played in the middle of the week. After the 1997 edition of the tournament, the tournament was placed on undefinitive hiatus, until May 31 2012, when Decio de Maria, President of La Liga MX, announced the return of the tournament which will take place 2 times a year just like the league tournament is played.

    American Exports:
Tijuana trio falls in Liga MX semifinals

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Tijuana’s Yanks look to be heading out of the Liga MX playoffs at the semifinal stage after losing 2-0 at León in the first leg on Thursday.

Edgar Castillo started as usual at left back, while Joe Corona was a last-minute inclusion in the 11 after Leandro Augusto injured himself in the warm-up.

Tijuana held their own for most the game, probably shading the first half in terms of chances, but Othoniel Arce and Carlos Peña struck for León in the 56th and 57th minutes, leaving Xolos facing an uphill task in Sunday’s return fixture at Estadio Caliente (7:30 pm ET, Univision Deportes).

Castillo played a few dangerous through balls in the first half and looked solid defensively in a game that was a midfield battle for large periods.

The 26-year-old also broke past two defenders in the 81st minute, but the resulting shot from the edge of the penalty area was straight down goalkeeper Christian Martínez’s throat.

Corona went 66 minutes but was quiet in midfield, his most noticeable moment coming in the 25th when he was booked for a late, and high, tackle.

Greg Garza was an unused substitute.

In the other Liga MX semifinal, Toluca defeated América 2-0 at Estadio Azteca.

Tijuana defeated Toluca 2-1 on Thursday in the first leg of Mexico's first division final and has the edge going into Sunday's deciding match in Toluca.

Fidel Martinez and Paraguayan Pablo Aguilar scored in the first half for Tijuana, with the second goal allowed despite replays suggesting he was offside. Edgar Benitez scored for Toluca.

Tijuana is a newcomer to Mexico's first division and was promoted only last year, while Toluca is attempting to win its 11th title to equal Guadalajara Chivas as Mexico's most successful club.

Tijuana reach top, claim Liga MX title
    [IMG]

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Four years ago, they weren’t even in the top flight. But on Sunday, Club Tijuana became champions.

American trio Edgar Castillo, Joe Corona and Greg Garza all picked up Liga MX winners medals on Sunday night after the Xolos defeated Toluca 2-0 in the Estadio Nemesio Díez to claim the 2012 Apertura title.

The victory handed Tijuana a 4-1 aggregate lead in the final series and secured the border club’s first ever league title after an historic season. The club only formed in 2007 and has since gained support from both sides of the border.

Castillo (above, right) won his second Mexican first-division title – the other coming in the Clausura 2008 with Santos Laguna – and went the full 90 minutes in the second leg of the final, and all 180 for the home-and-home series.

The Las Cruces, N.M., native was much more solid at left back than in the first leg and commentators on Mexican TV praised his performance, as well as the revival of a floundering career since he joined Tijuana a little less than a year ago

Three teams to move in Liga MX
    [IMG]

There were huge changes announced at Monday evening’s Liga MX owners’ meeting, with three teams set to move location.

The first announcement was Jaguares de Chiapas being sold to Queretaro – a city where that saw its team relegated last season after battling over the final few weeks.

San Luis has also asked the Liga MX for a change of site, with owner Carlos Lopez Chargoy stating that lack of support within the community was the reason for petitioning for the move.

Irapuato Veracruz, Acapulco and Puebla have been rumored to be possible destinations for the team that has struggled to make an impact on Mexico’s top division.

Perhaps the most incredible news coming out of the meeting was La Piedad also asking for permission to move.

    MEXICO ADVANCE DESPITE DEFEAT

The USA’s late comeback meant that Mexico finished in fourth place in the Hex, despite being beaten 2-1 by Costa Rica on a late winner by RSL striker Alvaro Saborio. El Tri now move on to an intercontinental playoff, where they will face New Zealand, with the first leg scheduled for either Nov 13 or Nov 14 at the Estadio Azteca

Mexican press shout their gratitude to USMNT for rescuing El Tri:
    "We love you!"

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – It's hard to imagine the United States ever getting such a warm vibe from the press down in Mexico as they did on Wednesday morning.

“We Love You!” was Récord’s main headline, in English, after the United States saved Mexico the ignominy of a fifth-place finish in the Hex thanks to Graham Zusi and Aron Jóhannsson’s late goals against Panama on Tuesday.

Below is a photo of Javier “Chicharito” Hernández with his arms aloft holding the Stars and Stripes.

“A pathetic Tricolor owes its life to its bitter rival,” reads the blurb in the same newspaper. “The US saves a Mexican collapse.”

The overriding sentiment in all publications south of the border is one of gratitude, with the Fox Deportes header on the front of their website simply stating, “Gracias, USA.”

Over at ESPN Deportes is a photo of Puebla defender Michael Orozco Fiscal celebrating his goal against Panama with the backdrop of a US flag and Chicharito underneath praying.

“God bless America!” is the headline, a sentiment shared by many supporters of El Tri in the aftermath of an epic Tuesday evening in CONCACAF.

Mexico open World Cup playoff series vs. New Zealand with $600 million on the line

Mexico’s big two-game World Cup qualifying playoff series with New Zealand is finally here. Not just big ... huge! If El Tri miss out of the World Cup, it will reportedly cost them $600 million in "TV, merchandise, sponsorship, and other revenue." Mexico coach Miguel Herrera has already revealed his starting lineup, which might be odd except that New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert has revealed the Kiwis' starting XI, too. New Zealand are aiming for their second consecutive World Cup appearance but, to get there, they face a tough task.

    World Cup intercontinental playoff match

Backed into a corner by their CONCACAF counterparts since March, Mexico took out eight months of frustrations on New Zealand on Wednesday, just when it counted the most.

Paul Aguilar and Raúl Jiménez scored goals eight minutes apart in the first half and Oribe Peralta added two more after the break as a desperate El Tri squad pummeled New Zealand 5-1 in the first leg of the teams’ World Cup intercontinental playoff series at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Former New York Red Bulls defender Rafa Márquez punctuated the win with a goal off a Mexico corner kick in the 83rd minute, his 14th goal with Mexico in his 115th career appearance.
