Legendary New York defender Mike Petke joins Red Bulls front officeFan-favorite to serve as Individual Developmental Coach and Business Operations Manager. am excited and honored to begin my post-playing career with the Red Bulls,” Petke said. “This is where I started and ended my career, and there’s no place I’d rather be. I always will consider this club as my home and I am thrilled to be able to contribute my ideas here."

Red Bull New York added four players at Thursday’s 2011 MLS SuperDraft, held at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD. The Red Bulls selected Penn State University forward Corey Hertzog in the first round (13th overall), English midfielder John Rooney and North Carolina State defender Tyler Lassiter in the second round (25th and 30th overall, respectively), and University of Maryland midfielder Billy Cortes in the third round (38th overall).

“This is an exciting day for the organization,” said Red Bulls General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “We feel we’ve added four quality players who will improve the depth and talent level of our squad going forward. We think that each of our selections can contribute in some way in the coming years.”

Legendary defender Mike Petke? Fo' reals?

Anywho...solid draft by Red Bulls, though it remains to be seen how this team will play. They went from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 after Henry arrived and there was some speculation of a 4-3-3 after drafting Hertzog who was very highly thought of entering the draft. Henry, Luke Rodgers and Juan Agudelo could be a strong front three with Marquez, Tchani, and Lindpere in midfield. The defense could give them some troubles though as Danleigh Borman isn't good enough in defense, while Roy Miller isn't really that good at anything to play opposite Chris Albirght. I think they'll stick with a 4-4-2, which will have either Rodgers or Agudelo on the bench and Hertzog in the reserve league.

Red Bull New York announced today the signing of Norwegian International midfielder Jan Gunnar Solli. Solli will be added to the club’s roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate.

In 2003, he transferred to famed Norwegian side Rosenborg BK, where appeared in 85 matches from 2003 through 2006 and scored three goals. He helped the club win three Norwegian Premier League titles including back-to-back championships in 2003 and 2004, and another in 2006, while also capturing the Norwegian Cup in 2003. Solli also helped Rosenborg reach the Group Stage of the 2004-2005 UEFA Champions League, scoring in the first leg of the final qualifying stage series against Israel’s Maccabi Haifa FC.

New York Red Bulls star Thierry Henry may soon be joined by an old friend.

Today’s edition of French sports daily L’Equipe says that the Red Bulls are quietly working on securing the services of French striker Nicolas Anelka, who would seem to be surplus at Chelsea FC after the acquisition of Fernando Torres

Longterm assistant coaches released on Monday afternoon

NEW YORK — The last remnants of the previous coaching regimes at the New York Red Bulls are no longer with the club.

Assistant coach Richie Williams (above, at right) and goalkeeping coach Des McAleenan (left) were relieved of their duties on Monday afternoon.

“As an organization, we decided to go a different direction with our coaching staff,” Erik Solér, RBNY’s GM and sporting director, said in a statement released by the club. “We want to thank Richie and Des for their contributions to our franchise and wish them good luck in their future endeavors.”

Agudelo's first MLS goal is difference vs. Seattle
    [IMG]

HARRISON, N.J. – Forward Juan Agudelo scored his first career MLS goal to give the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 win over the visiting Seattle Sounders at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.

The decisive goal came in the 70th minute as Agudelo ran onto a long ball from midfielder Teemu Tainio. The 18-year-old, who was called up for upcoming US national team matches against Argentina and Paraguay, shrugged off Seattle defender Leo Gonzalez and coolly deposited past goalkeeper Kasey Keller for a ruthless finish.

New York had a golden opportunity to take the lead nine minutes into the match. After goalkeeper Greg Sutton saved the Red Bulls, coming off his line to smother a deflected ball which fell invitingly for Seattle’s Freddy Montero in the box, RBNY earned a penalty kick.

Juan Agudelo was great according to reports and the highlights. He won the penalty that Keller saved and scored the game winner, muscling two defenders off the ball before finishing with the outside of his foot. Great work from an 18 year old. The future is bright with this one

New York send Borman, Tchani, '12 pick to TFC for 5-time Best XI

NEW YORK – Dwayne De Rosario has a new home, and the New York Red Bulls have a new engine for their offense.

The Red Bulls acquired the five-time MLS Best XI selection via a trade with Toronto FC for two players and a future draft pick on Friday, giving New York head coach Hans Backe the playmaker he’s sought since taking the reins in the Big Apple last season.

The Red Bulls shipped talented young defensive midfielder and 2010 MLS SuperDraft pick Tony Tchani and South African midfielder Danleigh Borman to Toronto, along with their first-round pick in the 2012 SuperDraft.

De Rosario is eligible to play in New York’s matchup against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday (7:30 pm ET, Matchday Live, Direct Kick), while Tchani and Borman are eligible to play when Toronto host Chivas USA (1 pm ET, TSN).

Red Bulls add ex-Hamburg goalkeeper Rost as third DP
    [IMG]
German international GK played nearly 20 years in Bundesliga

After hinting all season they had no intentions of signing a third Designated Player, the New York Red Bulls did just that on Wednesday morning with the announcement that German goalkeeper Frank Rost will join the club.

Rost comes to MLS with 20 years of experience in the Bundesliga and is being counted on to settle down what has been an unstable goalkeeper situation in the last two months.

The 38-year old Rost has been capped four times by the German national team and has made more than 400 appearances in league action during his career.

First-half beauty by Lindpere leads Bulls past French powerhouse

    New York Red Bulls 1
    Paris Saint Germain 0

-- The New York Red Bulls won their opening game of the 2011 Emirates Cup with a 1-0 win over French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.

The game’s only goal came from New York midfielder Joel Lindpere, who slotted home after a great through ball from forward Juan Agudelo.

The Red Bulls side put in a solid defensive display as a new look PSG put them under intense pressure, especially late on in the second half as they searched for an equalizer.

But marshaled by stand-in captain Tim Ream — Thierry Henry and Rafael Márquez were both rested ahead of Sunday’s match-up with Arsenal — the New York defense rarely looked flustered as they completed an impressive start to their Emirates Cup campaign

Emirates Cup: Henry, RBNY tie Arsenal 1-1, take the title
Late Gunners own-goal gives Red Bulls prestigious crown

    — New York knew a tie with Arsenal in their last game of the Emirates Cup would be good enough to take the coveted trophy back home to Red Bull Arena.

They left it late, but Roy Miller emerged as the hero for the Red Bulls as his pull-back was deflected into the Arsenal net by Gunners’ youngster Kyle Bartley to knot the score in the 84th minute.

At the final whistle, New York players celebrated winning the prestigious title, joining Arsenal and Hamburg as the only teams to lift the Emirates Cup in its five-year history.

Red Bulls must end their culture

Carson, Calif. -- New York Red Bulls supporters were reminded of their favorite soccer team's frailties, weaknesses and inconsistencies in the past two weeks.

Do the names Dwayne De Rosario, Todd Dunivant, Brad Davis and Mike Magee ring a bell or two?

They should. They once played and sometimes stood out for the Red Bulls, who for some reason were traded away by the Major League Soccer club.

    WAIVING GOODBYE
Red Bulls release 6, including Horwath, Rooney

    By Michael Lewis
    BigAppleSoccer.com Editor

The Red Bulls started to clean house this week, only the players they released weren't necessarily the ones that will make their fans very happy.

The Major League Soccer team on Wednesday waived six players who barely performed during the 2011 season.

They were goalkeeper Alex Horwath, defender Mychel Jones, Tyler Lassiter and Theodore Schneider and midfielders Marcos Paullo and John Rooney, the younger brother of Manchester United and English standout striker Wayne Rooney.

    Report:
Red Bulls confirm Henry to Arsenal loan

    Report:
NY GM Erik Solér confirms two-month loan to Gunners

It’s a done deal: Thierry Henry will be heading back to Arsenal for two months.

On Friday, Red Bulls GM Erik Solér, following earlier comments from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, confirmed to the New York Post that the 34-year-old French striker will suit up for the Gunners once more. It’s a move that would benefit everyone involved, Solér said.

“[The loan deal was] the total package,” the Norwegian told the Post. “[…] We feel it’s a good honor for a guy who’s been with us 18 months. This is something he thought he wanted to do, and it’s easy to see. And on [the] sporting side, it’s better for him to train at Arsenal than if we turn something like that down. I couldn’t find a single reason to say no

Chances of Henry staying at Arsenal?
    Zero, says Backe

NO GOING BACK: The chances of Thierry Henry staying at Arsenal past his two-month loan? Zero, says Red Bulls coach Hans Backe in this Swedish interview. The French star's "highest goal" is to win an MLS Cup, Backe says, and he's not expecting Henry to start during his time back at the Emirates, either. (fotbollskanalen.se - Dec. 30, 2011)

New York Red Bulls Add Defender Jonathan Borrajo
24-year-old ex-RBNY Academy product should strengthen backline
    [IMG]

My Once a Metro colleague Dan Ferris wrote only yesterday about the number of openings left to be filled on the New York Red Bulls roster. There's one fewer opening as of this morning, after the club announced the signing of Jonathan Borrajo, an American right back from Clifton, New Jersey who most recently played for Hamarkameratene (or "Ham-Kam") in the Norwegian second division. He appeared briefly for the Red Bulls' reserve squad toward the tail end of the 2010 season, scoring a goal against D.C. United reserves in a 2-2 away draw in November
