Japan taking note of Kimura's rise
    [IMG]
Colorado defender spent 12 days in native Japan on media circuit following MLS Cup

The world as Kosuke Kimura knew it changed seemingly overnight following the Colorado Rapids MLS Cup win last November.

Kimura’s parents and brother had flown from Japan to be at BMO Field in Toronto for the final, in which Kimura had played all 120 minutes in the Rapids 2-1 win over Dallas.

The next day, Kenta, Kimura’s brother who serves as his manager in their native Japan, saw his phone light up with requests from media from their home country.

“I wasn’t going to go home because I saw my parents and older brother when they came to MLS Cup,” said the Rapids defender. “But after we won, my brother started getting emails from media asking when I was coming back. All of a sudden we had around 10 interviews lined up, so I knew I had to go home.”

Rapids finally get their man in Irish striker Caleb Folan
    [IMG]
Ex-Hull City FW officially in fold, may be key during busy summer

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Gary Smith finally got his man. After protracted contract negotiations, Caleb Folan is officially a Colorado Rapid.

The MLS Cup champions confirmed on Wednesday that they have signed the Irish national-team striker, who spent the preseason with the club. Per league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The former Hull City man still had 18 months left on his contract with the English Championship team and it was a process to finally get the 28-year-old to sign on the dotted line once the two sides had agreed on the terms to buy him out of the loan.

Folan arrived in Colorado on Tuesday and worked out with the club for the first time as an official member of the Rapids on Wednesday

Rapids too strong, spoil expansion debut for Timbers
    [IMG]

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Colorado Rapids scored three goals in the first 30 minutes of their opening game as defending MLS Cup champions on Saturday night, and spoiled the MLS debut of the expansion Portland Timbers with a 3-1 win at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Jeff Larentowicz, Omar Cummings and Jamie Smith each scored for the Rapids, who controlled much of the tempo of the match before Kenny Cooper scored the Timbers’ first-ever MLS goal on a skipping free kick in the 80th minute.

But Cooper’s historic goal certainly wasn’t enough to seriously threaten the Rapids, who got on the board with a scrappy goal from Larentowicz in the eighth minute.

no problem for Rapids, who are happy to be home
After long season of travel, Colorado will take weather at DSG Park

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – After winter weather moved into Colorado late Tuesday night and left a blanket of snow over the Denver Metro area, game time temperatures for Thursday night’s Rapids vs. Crew wil card game (10 pm ET, streamed live on MLSsoccer.com, TSN2 in Canada) are expected to be around freezing.

The Rapids will take it, though. For them, the most important thing is that the game is at home.

Rapids, Smith part ways after rocky 2011 campaign
2010 Cup champs won't renew contract, on hunt for replacement

Twelve months ago, the Colorado Rapids were on their way to the 2010 MLS Cup title. Now they’re on the hunt for a new head coach.

On Monday afternoon, the club announced it has parted ways with Gary Smith after declining to renew the Englishman's contract.

“After meeting with Gary, we decided it would be in the best interest of both parties to move in a different direction,” Rapids managing director Jeff Plush said in a statement. “We’d like to thank Gary for his many contributions to the Colorado Rapids organization. He was instrumental in the Rapids winning our first-ever MLS Cup last year, and we wish him nothing but the best as he explores new opportunities.”

Rapids re-sign Mullan to multi-year deal
Five-time Cup champ delighted with new deal at hometown club

NEW YORK – The Colorado Rapids announced on Monday that they have re-signed Colorado-native Brian Mullan to a multi-year contract. The midfielder was acquired by the Rapids at the trade deadline in 2010, and helped lead the club to its first-ever MLS Cup two months later.

“Brian has established himself as one of the top midfielders in the league, a player with an impressive track record of success, and we’re thrilled that he will continue to play an important role for our club,” Bravo said. “He’s a dedicated, passionate player whose hard work and skill provides an example both for players already in our club and for youth soccer players across Colorado.”

Brazilian-American after his dream to play for the U.S.
American-born defender has lived nearly his entire life in Brazil

Commerce City, Colo. - When Oscar Pareja began his first meeting with the team on Monday, he asked the players coming in to tryout to introduce themselves to the rest of the group. Goalkeeper Steve Cronin went first, followed defender / midfielder Aaron Pitchkolan. Oscar then pointed to Daniel Navarro in the center of the room.

"I have a dream to play for the U.S. National team," he said in English after a morning training session. "I am very hungry to make it here."

The former Corinthian Paranaense and Avaí Futebol Clube product isn't alone in seeking his dream to play in Major League Soccer.

Pareja takes Colorado to Hawaii to get first-team reps
    [IMG]
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Hawaiian_Islands_Invitational

Colorado’s trip to Hawaii is purely for business purposes. With less than three weeks until the regular season opener, the Rapids still have plenty of learning to do as they continue to work toward implementing a 4-3-3 scheme under new head coach Oscar Pareja.

“We have good competition, good weather and [we] get the team together all the time and keep preparing for the season that is around the corner,” Pareja said on Friday. “This is great timing for us.”

The Rapids will play two international matches in the Hawaiian Islands Invitational, the first of which will be against Yokohama FC on Thursday, a prospect that has Yokohama native and Colorado defender Kosuke Kimura excited to face his hometown club.

Wahl started 11 regular-season games and two Canadian Championship games for the Impact in 2012, playing both at left back and at center back. The 28-year-old has been in MLS since 2006, and has spent time with the Kansas City and Seattle organizations.

    Recap:
Rapids bust losing streak with huge 1-0 over RSL

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Joseph Nane’s first career goal was the difference as the Colorado Rapids snapped a franchise-tying six-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night.

The win wasn’t enough for the Rapids to claim the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup after RSL won the two sides’ first two meetings earlier this season, but Colorado collected their first points since a 3-0 win over Portland on June 30.

    Recap:
Colorado, LA split the points after pair of early goals

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Try as they might, there was nothing separating the Colorado Rapids and LA Galaxy Sunday night.

With on team fighting for playoff survival and the other for seeding, the Rapids and Galaxy played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, further complicating the LA’s position in the Western Conference playoff picture while leaving the Rapids once again on the brink of elimination from postseason contention.

Colorado officially signing of Chilean forward Harbottle
    [IMG]

The Colorado Rapids added to their stable of South American talent on Thursday, announcing the expected signing of Chilean winger Kevin Harbottle. The 22-year-old winger and Chilean national teamer joins the Rapids from Chilean powerhouse Universidad Católica.

Harbottle will be eligible pending receipt of his P-1 work visa and International Transfer Certificate. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Kevin is a young, dynamic attacking player who will be a great fit for our squad this season,” Rapids technical director Paul Bravo. “At just 22 years old, he’s already proven he can play at a high level, and we look forward to helping him develop further as he integrates into our team and our league."
