Domi finds himself at home in New England

French left back hopes to help Revs back to playoffs

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – One week in Boston inspired Didier Domi to make the move from Europe to the United States.

Domi spent a brief period on trial with the New England Revolution in September as he and the Revs assessed whether a potential transfer made sense for both parties.

After getting a feel for the club and the city, Domi decided it did. The Revs agreed.

“You have to see if you feel good first with the team, the trainer and the town,” Domi told MLSsoccer.com earlier this week. “When I saw the atmosphere, it was good. There were a lot of youngsters and Steve [Nicol, Revolution coach] is very nice. That is the best part – to come here when you have the relationships.”

Those nascent bonds encouraged the former Newcastle, Olympiakos and Paris Saint-Germain defender to hold off on making a more lucrative move within Europe until the Revolution could claim him in the MLS discovery process and negotiate a deal for his services.

A French report this morning claims that midfielder Ousmane Dabo will be joining fellow Frenchman Didier Domi and sign with the New England Revolution. The article says he is soon to undergo a medical. (FRENCH)

The Revs are also being linked with South African forward Benni McCarthy, who is on the outs at EPL side West Ham.

Another forward based overseas looking to latch on with an MLS club is Charlie Davies. His week-long trial continues today as D.C. United faces both Canada’s Under-20s and Florida International University in preseason exhibitions.

There is also a match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center at 5 p.m. ET. Five trialists are looking to make the squad for the Quakes.

New England claim US international Feilhaber
    [IMG]
    MF falls to Revs after Chivas, Philly pass;
    NE have no comment

The New England Revolution have claimed US national-teamer Benny Feilhaber, Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday night.

The World Cup veteran fell to the Revs after Chivas USA and Philadelphia both declined their options to claim him per the league's allocation order for incoming US internationals.

New England now must decide whether to keep Feilhaber or trade him. The club declined to comment when contacted by MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday night.

A UCLA product, Feilhaber signed with MLS last Friday after spending three seasons with Danish Superliga side AGF Aarhus. Per the league’s allocation order, Chivas USA had the first option to acquire the midfielder.

However, the player’s salary was the prime concern for the Goats, who will keep the top spot in the allocation order. Philadelphia retain the No. 2 spot.

New England add Argentine striker Caraglio as first-ever DP
22-year-old forward joins Revs from Argentine club Rosario Central

The New England Revolution have added their first-ever Designated Player — and, they hope, some much-needed scoring punch — in the form of Argentine striker Milton Caraglio.

Caraglio, 22, will move to MLS from Argentine side Rosario Central, pending the outcome of an entrance physical on Wednesday. Caraglio is expected to practice with the Revs for the first time on Thursday and will take up a roster spot and an international player slot upon the arrival of his international transfer certificate.

“We've been pretty open and public about our desire to add a player or two during this window,” vice president of player personnel Michael Burns told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday afternoon. “We're looking forward to getting Milton in as quickly as possible and getting acclimated to our guys, both on and off the field.”

Caraglio first popped up on the Revolution's radar earlier this year. After sorting through his record with Rosario (11 goals in 49 games in the Argentine first division from 2007-2010) and weighing the desire to sign more attacking players during the transfer window, the Revs decided to move for a player heavily linked to Catania (Italy) and West Ham United (England) last summer

    Chance to eliminate mistakes
Full 90-minute performances the objective against Columbus, Toronto

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Last weekend’s 2-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes felt all too familiar for the New England Revolution.

For the third straight game, the Revs approached the match with an attacking mindset and ultimately outshot their opponent – in this case by a margin of 18 to 14 – only to squander the chances they created and witness a pair of defensive mistakes result in two goals conceded. Remarkably, the result dropped the Revolution’s record this season to 0-6-5 when outshooting the opponent.

Despite playing their first match since officially being eliminated from playoff contention, head coach Steve Nicol said it wasn’t lack of impetus which proved the Revs’ downfall, but instead the same occasional lapses which have plagued them all season.

New England part ways with Nicol after 10 seasons
Revs moving in new direction after falling short of playoffs again

The Steve Nicol era has come to an end in New England.

The Revolution announced on Monday that they have parted ways with their long-time coach, who had been the head man at Gillette Stadium for a league-record 10 seasons. His career record in that time is 112-108-81, good for second in Major League Soccer in overall career games coached (301) and fourth in wins behind only Sigi Schmid, Bob Bradley and Bruce Arena.

Kick Off: Potential candidates to succeed Nicol are named
    [IMG]
Heaps, Ralston cited as possible managerial candidates in NE

who will take over for Steve Nicol in New England?

At the very end of his Boston Globe piece, Frank Dell’Apa reports that current broadcaster Jay Heaps and former Revs player stalwart Steve Ralston are among the candidates.

Nicol refused to delve into the reasons for the parting of ways with the club after 10 years, saying, “I have no interest in all of that stuff.”

FC Dallas manager Schellas Hyndman is interested in ousting the New York Red Bulls in Wednesday’s Wild Card match and advancing in the MLS Cup Playoffs. But he knows that in front of FC Dallas will be “a very talented group, probably the most talent in the league.”

Hyndman has a lot to be concerned about. Apparently the Red Bulls were “flying” in practice on Sunday and Monday.

Heaps to be named manager at New England
Former Revs' defender set to take the reigns at Gillette Stadium

NEW YORK - Jay Heaps is set to be named the New England Revolution’s new head coach, according to reports from the Boston Globe on Monday.

Last Wednesday Revs’ president Brian Bilello revealed to MLSsoccer.com how the board had lined up 12 potential candidates and that they would be announcing a new manager sometime this week.

Bilello was insistent that New England would not rush into appointing someone, and that a thorough interview procedure would ensue.

“Throughout the head coaching search that I've been doing with Michael [Burns], we're not just looking at a guy and saying who is going to be the best coach,” Bilello said. “We're also understanding what we want to be as an organization and then applying it to the interview process.”

Heaps thrilled to take coaching reins at New England
    [IMG]
Former Revs defender wants to lead club to back to glory

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – From the moment he retired back in 2009, new Revolution coach Jay Heaps waited for this day.

Heaps spent the past two years working in finance and keeping his toes in the Revolution waters as a broadcaster, but the 35-year-old always envisioned a point when he could throw himself back into the league on a full-time basis.

When the Revs offered him the chance to return to the club as its sixth coach, he accepted without any hesitation

Revs potentially fill problem spot by drafting Borman
Left back an issue in 2011; still must agree to deal for 2012

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – It didn't take long for New England to dip into the Re-Entry Draft and emerge with a potential solution at left back.

Former Toronto FC defender/midfielder Danleigh Borman could join the Revolution in time for the 2012 campaign after the club chose him with the first selection in Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Draft on Monday afternoon.

The former University of Rhode Island star represented a natural pick for a Revolution side that needs to boost its options at left back in time for next season, according to general manager Michael Burns.

“In talking with Jay [Heaps, Revolution coach], we feel like we have a few needs that we want to address during this offseason,” Burns told MLSsoccer.com on Monday. “A left-sided player is one of those. We feel there's a need there. Whether it's left back or left midfield, we feel like [Borman] can play a couple of different positions for us. That's really why we chose him.”

Jaqua, Simms give rebuilding Revs some veteran savvy
Re-Entry Draft picks have a combined nine titles between them

looks like new Revolution head coach Jay Heaps will have a pair of established veterans around to help him with his rebuilding efforts.

Forward Nate Jaqua (above) and defensive midfielder Clyde Simms are likely to join Heaps in New England after the Revolution picked both players in Stage 2 of the Re-Entry Draft on Monday afternoon.

Both will receive genuine contract offers within seven days as the Revs attempt to secure their signatures for next season. If either or both of the players cannot reach a new agreement for the 2012 campaign, the Revs would then secure the first right of refusal on their MLS rights

New England sign Simms following Re-Entry selection
Revs hope former DC midfielder will add veteran presence

Clyde Simms is officially a member of the Revolution. New England announced on Friday that they had signed the former D.C. United midfielder after taking him in Stage 2 of the Re-Entry Draft.

Simms made 182 appearances for D.C. during the past seven seasons, including 147 starts, primarily in defensive midfield. He started 29 matches for Ben Olsen in 2011. Terms of the deal were not disclosed per league and club policy

Revolution get their man in French newcomer Sene
    [IMG]

It didn't take long for Sène and the Revolution to sort out his future with his freedom from Bayern already in hand. With the deal now sealed, the onus now falls on the speedy striker to reproduce his form at a higher standard as he seeks to create his own path in MLS.

“We got the deal done pretty quickly once he left Arizona,” Burns said. “We're starting the visa process and the ITC process. We'll get them back as quickly as we can. He's got a history of scoring goals and we hope that continues in New England in 2012.”

    Revs sign midfielder Jeremiah White
Revs add speedy right-sided midfielder with European experience

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution today signed midfielder Jeremiah White. He will be formally added to the team’s roster upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and is expected to join the team for training next week. Per league and club policies, further contract details were not released.

The Revolution originally drafted White in the third round (23rd overall) of the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, but White pursued playing options abroad instead of signing with Major League Soccer.

White has one cap with the U.S. National Team. He came on as a substitute in the U.S.’ 2-0 win over Sweden in Carson, Calif., on Jan. 19, 2008
