Quakes drop friendly to Leicester City 3-1
    [IMG]
MLS side falls to first defeat of England tour; Wondo tallies

LEICESTER, England — The San Jose Earthquakes slipped to a 3-1 defeat on Thursday to a Leicester City outfit peppered with first-team members. Chris Wondolowski scored the lone goal and Ellis McLaughlin missed a late PK for the MLSers.

The disappointing result was compounded by injury scares to midfielder Ramiro Corrales and defender Tim Ward, although the injuries are not thought to be serious.

The result disappointed Quakes head coach Frank Yallop, who said he thought his players struggled playing their third game in as many days. However, he said he understands it's still early days this preseason.

“It’s not about the result right now," Yallop told MLSsoccer.com. "It’s about getting ready for our season.”

    Demolition Day
    [IMG]
SAN JOSE, Calif. – As the steel jaws of a giant excavator snapped shut Thursday on a chunk of wall from the old manufacturing facility where the Earthquakes hope to one day play soccer, San Jose general manager John Doyle couldn’t help but smile.
For everybody here, all the soccer fans in Northern California, this is a great day,” Doyle said. “We’ve always wanted a place that we could go and watch soccer. We haven’t had that. We’ve been waiting for a long, long time.”

Quakes spending big to upgrade scouting capabilities
San Jose aim to get a leg up with more detailed player analysis

SAN JOSE, Calif. — With hundreds of thousands of dollars expected to come off of their books and plenty of roster spots yet to be locked up, the San Jose Earthquakes are facing their thorniest offseason since being re-established in 2008.

The decisions Quakes officials make regarding how and where to spend that cash will either put the club on a path back to the playoffs, or on a return trip to the land of profound disappointment.

It’s a perfect time, in other words, for the Quakes to upgrade their scouting capabilities — which they’ve done in a big way.

San Jose make it official: Convey will not return in '12
    [IMG]
Earthquakes GM Doyle says midfielder's option won't be picked up

SAN JOSE, Calif. — What was long assumed is now official: Bobby Convey will not be back with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2012.

Quakes general manager John Doyle confirmed that fact Wednesday, telling MLSsoccer.com that the interpersonal chasm between Convey, the 28-year-old former US international, and coach Frank Yallop simply could not be bridged.

“Frank’s made it clear, and Bobby’s made it clear — they can’t work together,” Doyle said.

The impasse came into the open last month when Convey, the club’s highest-paid player in 2011, blasted Yallop for engaging in “mind games” over the course of the season. Convey bounced between left back and left midfield, was dropped on three occasions from the starting XI and didn’t see any competitive play after Aug. 27.

New Earthquakes stadium to feature field-level suites
    [IMG]
Unique addition a highlight of proposed future home in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Fans willing to pay the price are about to get an up-close-and-personal look at the future of soccer in San Jose.

The Quakes announced on Tuesday that even as their project wends its way through the city’s permitting process, they will begin selling seats this week for 12 field-level luxury suites on either sideline in the new stadium.

It’s an eye-catching addition to a design that originally didn’t feature any luxury suites at all.

“I don’t think there’s really any professional soccer venue that has a setup like this,” Quakes president David Kaval told MLSsoccer.com. “It’s a really cool design and we’re really happy to have it at the new venue.”

The suites are believed to be a unique feature among American soccer stadiums, building upon the team’s popular on-field seating areas at their current home of Buck Shaw Stadium.
Unlike those field seats, however, these come with all the amenities of a luxury box just a few steps away: a bar and longue area with a high-definition television and full catering available, VIP parking, even a private entrance to the stadium — which is currently slated for a 2013 debut.

Quakes sign Honduran Bernardez to bolster back line
San Jose nab 2010 WCup veteran center back from Anderlecht

San Jose certainly haven’t been afraid to shuffle the deck this offseason, and that trend hasn’t slowed just because of the holiday season.

The Earthquakes announced on Wednesday that the club has signed Honduran international center back Víctor Bernárdez, pending receipt of his P-1 Visa. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Víctor gives us another quality player in the center of our defense,” head coach Frank Yallop said in a statement. “He’s a big, tough, athletic defender who can also play well with his feet and distribute the ball. We’re excited to have him in the squad next season.”

Quakes, Mexican Olympic team to play doubleheader at AT&T Park on March 17

SAN JOSE, Calif. –- The San Jose Earthquakes announced Wednesday that the club will host the Houston Dynamo at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Saturday, March 17 as part of a doubleheader spectacular with the Mexican U-23 National Team.

The Earthquakes will open the twin bill by taking on 2011 MLS Cup finalist Houston at 2 p.m. with Mexico’s U-23s taking on the Senegalese U-23s at 4:30 p.m.

“This game is an exciting opportunity for our fans in San Francisco and the North Bay to see the club play at one of the premier sports venues in the country. Soccer has a rich history in San Francisco and we look forward to adding to that legacy,” said Earthquakes President David Kaval.

Quakes fans show in force as commission votes unanimously

Bust out the champagne and the hardhats.

The San Jose Earthquakes' proposed $60 million stadium will break ground this year after clearing the last legal hurdle, overcoming an appeal by six votes to none. Apparently, the San Jose Planning Commission didn't think that potential noise complaints would be an issue for the airport-adjacent stadium.

More than 300 'Quakes fans showed up to the meeting, many of them turned away at the door. Check out the reaction as the votes became official. (VIDEO:http://www.twitvid.com/VJGSU)

Quakes having a blast as they roar to top of table
    [IMG]
Exciting 5-3 win vs. D.C. United puts Quakes atop Supporters' Shield standings

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Chris Wondolowski said he hasn’t been on a team like this since the championship-winning seasons of the Houston Dynamo. Rafael Baca referenced the West Coast Conference-winning Loyola Marymount squad from his senior year. Justin Morrow hearkened back to his days winning Ohio state titles with Saint Ignatius High in Cleveland.

Suffice to say, it’s been a long time since most any of the Earthquakes have been on a team that’s playing as well as San Jose are right now.

After blitzing D.C. United 5-3 on Wednesday, the Quakes are 6-0-1 and have tied the longest unbeaten streak in MLS this year. At 7-1-1, they’re continuing what already rates as the franchise’s best-ever start to a season.

Alan Gordon came through in the clutch for a third-straight match for San Jose

CARSON, Calif. – Alan Gordon scored in second-half stoppage time as the San Jose Earthquakes scored three unanswered goals to beat the LA Galaxy 3-2 at Home Depot Center on Wednesday.

The former Galaxy player headed in the match-winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time for the decisive goal.

Hector Jimenez and Mike Magee had given the Galaxy a 2-0 lead through 73 minutes but the ‘Quakes came back nonetheless. Jimenez picked up a red card on the hour and a 10-man Galaxy squad squandered its lead.

gritty defensive effort helps Quakes extend Supporters' Shield lead

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes made sure FC Dallas’ road renaissance was short-lived.

Dallas came to California riding off their first road victory of the season, but San Jose used first-half goals from Marvin Chávez and Alan Gordon to put an end to that streak with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Quakes survived a 94th-minute penalty-kick miss from defender Jair Benítez, who pushed his attempt just high and over the crossbar with a road point begging to be taken.

Lenhart's "fairy tale" goal fits the script for Earthquakes
    [IMG]

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – As the minutes wound down and the missed opportunities piled up, a sellout crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium knew that if the San Jose Earthquakes were going to find a last-minute equalizer against the Chicago Fire, it could only come from one man.

With 2,500 fans wearing wigs based on his blond locks, Steven Lenhart returned from a four-game absence due to concussion symptoms and delivered a 98th-minute goal to give shorthanded San Jose a 1-1 tie.

League-leading Earthquakes acquire Ballouchy from NYRB
    [IMG]

The league-leading San Jose Earthquakes have landed another weapon in the race for the Supporters' Shield.

San Jose on Monday acquired veteran playmaking midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for a 2013 international spot and a conditional 2013 draft pick.

“I’ve admired his play over the seven years he’s been in the league,” Earthquakes manager Frank Yallop said in a club statement. “He’s steadily improved since joining MLS. Mehdi’s a good player, a great addition to our team and we’re looking forward to having him here in San Jose.”

Earthquakes still sprinkling magic on MLS, USMNT

There’s just something about these Cardiac Quakes and their magical 2012 season.

Just when you thought that the San Jose “Goonies” came up with every possible kind of variation on the stoppage time victory this year, there was Saturday night. Seattle’s Fredy Montero scored a stoppage time equalizer only for Steven Lenhart to do him one better and clinch a 2-1 win (watch the highlights here).

Quakes hit three off free kicks in demolition of Goats

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Jose juggernaut continued to steamroll the competition on Sunday evening, as the Earthquakes thumped Chivas USA, 4-0, and retook lone possession of the top spot in the MLS Supporters Shield standings.

MLS’ best attack showed its teeth early and often in front of a loud packed house at Buck Shaw Stadium, but they did it in a different way this time. Three direct freekicks, one from Victor Bernardez and two from Ramiro Corrales, did the majority of the damage against a clearly overmatched Chivas USA.

Quakes close in on Shield after sweeping Seattle
    Make it a clean sweep.

Before the season few expected the San Jose Earthquakes to win every one of their three matches against the Seattle Sounders, including two at CenturyLink Field. But the Quakes completed the feat on Saturday with a 2-1 triumph.

Chris Wondolowski scored his 10th game-winner this season (a new MLS record) and extended his lead in the Golden Boot race. The frontrunner for MVP credited the Seattle crowd for their part in his performance: "When you have a good atmosphere, it helps raise my level, I think. It makes me want to raise it a little extra notch."

The Sounders, whose last loss came against the Earthquakes, were missing star players Eddie Johnson and Mauro Rosales. But manager Sigi Schmid wasn’t about to make excuses: "We would have been overrun even with Eddie and Mauro,” he said. "They killed us in the first half, to be quite honest. If we play like we played in the first half, we won't go very far [in the playoffs]."
