PORTLAND, Ore. – Jack Jewsbury skidded a low ball into the net from 35 yards in the 84th minute to break a scoreless tie and lift Portland Timbers on their way to a 2-0 victory over Chivas USA in a US Open Cup play-in game on Tuesday.

The game was the first for the Timbers in Portland since its ascension to MLS and drew a sellout crowd of 5,061 to Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland.

Jewsbury, who entered the game in the 71st minute, was the second wind that Portland needed late in the match, bailing out a team that controlled the run of action for nearly the entire game but had been unable to break through

    Press Release!

Late goals by midfielder Jack Jewsbury and defender Eric Brunner guided the Portland Timbers to a 2-0 win over Chivas USA in a Major League Soccer U.S. Open Cup play-in match Tuesday at Merlo Field. The goals by Jewsbury and Brunner came two minutes apart inside the final six minutes of the match against a 10-man Chivas USA side.

With the win, the Timbers advance to a second round of qualification matches to earn a spot in the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and will visit the San Jose Earthquakes in April; match details will be announced at a later date.

Under a steady rain and soggy conditions, the Timbers went to work on offense from the opening whistle and were persistent on the attack, out-shooting Chivas USA 13-3 on the night. Coming on as a second-half sub, Jewsbury delivered the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute on a shot from distance. Brunner then doubled Portland's lead two minutes later off a corner kick.

Jewsbury recorded a goal and an assist, forwards Kenny Cooper and Jorge Perlaza each recorded a team-high three shots and goalkeeper Jake Gleeson earned the shutout on one save to lead the Timbers. Portland's backline held Chivas USA, which played the final 47 minutes with 10 players due to a first-half ejection, to just three shots.

In the 43rd minute, Chivas USA went down a man when defender Andrew Boyens received his second caution of the first half and was sent off by referee Juan Guzman. Chivas USA absorbed the Timbers offensive pressure for most of the match; goalkeeper Dan Kenndey finished the night with three saves.

In the 84th minute, the Timbers played the ball up field through the middle of the park and Jewsbury was the recipient of a pass 30 yards out from goal. He fired a left footed shot on frame, which skipped off the ground six yards from the goal and the ball sliced by Kennedy and inside the left post for a 1-0 Portland lead.

Jewsbury then set up Portland's next strike in the 86th minute. Off a corner kick from the left side, Jewsbury delivered the ball into the center of the box. It deflected off a Chivas USA player and down Brunner in front of the goal. The defender then tapped the ball past Kennedy to secure the victory.

Playing their first match in Portland as an MLS side, the Timbers got off to a quick start as strike partners Cooper and Perlaza gave the Chivas USA backline all they could handle. The two combined for four shots, which each taking a shot on goal, and six offside calls in the first half.

Defender Rodney Wallace nearly dialed in a shot from 30 yards out into the top left corner of the frame off a free kick opportunity, but his effort missed just high in the 42nd minute.

The Timbers and Chivas USA battled through a physical second half, and the home side continued to pressure. Cooper forced Kennedy into a diving save in the 62nd minute when his free kick from distance deflected off the two-man wall and went curling towards the left stick.

Gleeson made a key stop on a counter by Chivas USA in the 84th minute just before the Timbers scored. On a long ball over the top, Chivas USA forward Justin Braun forced Gleeson off his line and with a run towards the box. Gleeson ended the threat with a sliding stop to take the ball off the foot of Braun and, at the time, kept the match scoreless.

Chivas USA's best chance of the night came in the 34th minute. Forward Victor Estupiñan set up forward Marcos Mondaini for a one-on-one inside the box with Gleeson. On the shot, Gleeson got a piece of the ball, which slowed down Mondaini's effort just enough to allow Brunner to track back and clear the ball away before it bounced into the back of an open net.

The Timbers return to their regular-season schedule Saturday as they visit the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium; kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific). The match will be televised live on KPTV FOX 12 and in Spanish on Estrella TV, with live radio broadcasts on 95.5 The Game and La Pantera 940AM.
