We've been told by the Democrats that SS payments are safe and separate from other programs. Either the Dems have been lying about that, or Obama quite literally is using SS payments as a negotiation ploy to get the GOP to cave after he scares grandma and grandpa.
If the Republicans are going to win in destroying Social Security, most people (young and old) will die when they reach 65 anyway, so next month's as good a time as any to kill the millions already over 65.
Obama destroyed social security by borrowing so much the govt. has a choice between debt payments and paying benefits.
It's nonsense. We have enough monthy revenue to cover the debt, SS and Medicare. If he doesn't prioritize the spending, then it's on him.
...more scare tactics and fear-mongering to force feed jam-thru another agenda for the robber barons & off-shore banking tycoons!
What interest rate does the govt. Pay on the debt these days? <1%. At 4%, the payments are more than we spend on SS. It is just a matter of time.
It's irrelevant, though. The only way that SS payments won't be made is if Obama decides to not make the payments. That's on him, and nobody else.
So what is it that he IS supposed to cut? If he cuts something near and dear to the R's, he'd be hearing bloody murder about that too. Doesn't matter what he does, the squirrels will be nipping at his ankles. Bottomline, I hate the debt ceiling issue. If it's in the budget that's been passed by congress, they need to pay for it. Both parties have worked the debt ceiling to their advantage and both parties have been wrong doing it. As it is, we just end up rehashing the same issue twice, making no real progress and just stirring up more partisanship that makes it even more difficult to resolve other issues.
I think he has to prioritize things. Pay the debt payments. Pay the entitlements. Then figure out what to do with what's left. There won't be much left.
He HAS prioritized the spending, but the right-wingnuts have blocked his choices. Try to pay attention.
I've been paying attention, but I only see the desire to spend and spend without respect to the consequences.
Both the debt and the deficit exploded when the Dems held both the House and the Senate. How did the right-wingnuts block his choices when he piled up debt like no President before?
Do we have a Republican president? Debt doesn't matter. What matters is the ratio of debt to GDP. Some other countries are worse in that than us. Things are good; let's deregulate financial companies. Do we have a Democratic president? Let's lower the national life expectancy to 65.
