rian Magee (35-4-1, 24 KO’s) defeated 33-year-old Jaime Barboza (17-5, 8 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night to capture the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) World super middleweight title at the Gimnasio Nacional, San Jose, Costa Rica.

Talk about your soft landings. Magee, 36, was taken out by IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in the 10th round last March in a fight that Magee wasn’t even remotely competitive in. With that kind of a one-sided loss, you would think that it would be at least a year before Magee would be given the opportunity to fight for another title, but here he was fighting for the WBA interim strap tonight.
