    MLSsoccer.com's "24 Under 24" returns Sept. 12
    [IMG]

One of MLSsoccer.com’s most popular series is back and better than ever. Just in time for the stretch run to the MLS Cup playoffs.

Beginning on Monday, Sept. 12, MLSsoccer.com will bring you our second annual 24 Under 24 — the ultimate countdown of the 24 best MLS players under the age of 24. Who will succeed Seattle’s Fredy Montero at the top of the list?

Mark your calendars: The 24 Under 24 fan vote kicks off Sept. 5 with the final countdown to No. 1 beginning in earnest on Sept. 12.

Last year's top three in the rankings earned a DP contract, a US national team call-up and MLS Rookie of the Year honors, respectively. Who's next?

24 Under 24: The expert panel and voting process
    [IMG]
Nine of the most respected names
in national media circles comprised this year's voters

For the second annual MLSsoccer.com 24 Under 24 list of the top players in MLS under the age of 24, MLSsoccer.com enlisted the help of nine of the most respected national soccer observers. Their votes were tallied along with those of the MLSsoccer.com editorial staff to establish the final rankings of this year’s edition of the 24 Under 24.

    The 24 Under 24 panel
    • Jeff Carlisle (ESPN.com)
    • Marc Connolly (ESPN)
    • Steve Davis (SI.com)
    • Brian Dunseth (FOX Soccer)
    • Allen Hopkins (FOX Soccer)
    • Alexi Lalas (ESPN)
    • Kyle Martino (FOX Soccer)
    • Taylor Twellman (ESPN)
    • Grant Wahl (SI.com)

    The Voting Process
Each member of the panel submitted his top 24 MLS players under the age of 24 based on grades in five categories:
    • current skill
    • upside potential
    • intangibles
    • Q-rating
    • future transfer value

Each player was then assigned a point total based on the final position on each panelist’s ballot. A player received 24 points for earning the top spot on a media member’s Top 24 list all the way down to a single point for the No. 24-ranked player. The totals for each of the 10 voters (including one vote for the MLSsoccer.com editiorial staff) were then added together to determine the players' final score and ranking.

The third annual MLSsoccer.com 24 Under 24 — the ultimate ranking of the top young players in MLS — will return on September 10, with the #1 player being revealed on Friday, September 21. This year, we're letting you have your say in who that #1 player should be.

    #24 Jonathan Osorio, Toronto FC
    [IMG]

    Pos: M | Toronto FC | Age: 21

The Ontario native made his way onto the list after enjoying as good a start to his rookie campaign as could have been imagined. Osorio's received steady minutes for a Toronto FC team in rebuilding mode and demonstrated his propensity for timely goals, including a wonderful strike against the New York Red Bulls back in April. The 21-year-old midfielder is blessed with technical abilities that outstrip his experience and with five goals in 2013 he has looked mature beyond his years, making an impact as both a substitute and starter. One of the few positives the team can boast this season, his future in Toronto looks extremely bright.

    #23 Dillon Powers, Colorado Rapids
    [IMG]
    Pos: M | Colorado Rapids | Age: 22

Asked to step into a key role from day one because of an injury to playmaking midfielder Martin Rivero, the Rapids rookie has exceeded expectations in his first year on the job. The Notre Dame product made his way onto this list by playing outside his comfort zone (and excelling) as an attacking midfielder, while also sliding back to man the holding mid role he played in college. Powers, the former US U-18 and U-20 international, hasn't had difficulty adapting to either position, scoring four goals and dishing out five assists in 27 starts. “Every game is teaching him something else and the best part with Dillon is he’s like a sponge,” Rapids coach Oscar Pareja said earlier this season. “He’s growing and he understands it’s not quite there yet and he needs to keep improving, and that’s encouraging for the coach.”
