Former two-time WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (43-4, 25 KO’s) defeated Rigoberto Alvarez (27-4, 20 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision to captured the interim World Boxing Association junior middleweight title on Wednesday night at the Entertainment Centre, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The final judges’ scores were 114-113, 117-111 and 117-111.

Mundine boxing beautifully, landing combinations and hard right hands to control the 33-year-old Alvarez. Mundine also was quite effective with his powerful, which he used to keep the hard hitting Alvarez from getting too close to land his own big shots.

Alvarez, ranked #4 by the WBC, is the older brother of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez. He’s not quite as smooth as Saul is but showed he showed good power on the occasions that he was able to land against Mundine.
