After US draw, Canada fit, confident ahead of Cuba trip

TORONTO, ON – Every single Canadian player and coach trained with a smile on their face on Tuesday morning.

Canada’s 0-0 draw against the United States on Sunday has done wonders for the team’s confidence in advance of the resumption of World Cup qualifying on Friday, when the Canucks take on Cuba in Havana (11 a.m. PT, Sportsnet).

Occean scores winner for Canada despite going down to 10 men

HAVANA – Canada certainly didn’t make it easy on themselves, but they still managed to pick up a 1-0 win over Cuba on Friday to start their third round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The Canadians took the advantage nine minutes into the second half on Olivier Occean’s headed goal from 10 yards out, but that joy was muted just 10 minutes later when goakeeper Lars Hirschfeld handled a ball outside his 18-yard box and was issued a straight red card.

Milan Borjan came in off the bench and kept Cuba off the board the rest of the way and, with Hirschfeld suspended for Canada’s next qualifier on June 12, he’ll likely get the start against Honduras.

Canada’s goal came with the hosts in the ascendency to start the second half. Cuba had troubled the Canadian goal a few times before David Edgar’s cross with the outside of his boot was headed home by Occean.

Hexagonal set: Costa Rica, Jamaica join USA & Mexico
    [IMG]

And then there were six. With Tuesday's results in the books, the participants of CONCACAF's final round of 2014 World Cup qualifying — a.k.a. "The Hexagonal" — are set.

Joining the United States in the Hex are Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico and Panama. The US got the job done with a 3-1 win over Guatemala, who were leapfrogged by Jamaica after the Reggae Boyz' 4-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda in Kingston.

    Format

The fourth round will see the 3 group winners and 3 group runners-up from the third round compete in a single group of 6 teams. This stage is often referred to as the Hexagonal or Hex, and has been used by CONCACAF to determine its World Cup finals entrants since the qualification tournament for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

The matches are scheduled to be played from 6 February to 15 October 2013. The top three teams will advance to the World Cup finals tournament in Brazil, and the fourth-placed team will advance to a play-off against the winner of the Oceania qualifiers.

    Re: 2014 WCQ Fixtures

The number of call-ups allow Klinsmann the flexibility of managing a roster that features eight players who are one caution card away from suspension. The roster is expected to be pared down following the two international friendlies.

Due to outstanding club commitments (playoffs, domestic and continental cup competitions), several players will be late arrivals into camp.

    GOALKEEPERS (6):
Brad Guzan (Aston Villa/England), Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Tim Howard (Everton/England), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

    DEFENDERS (8):
DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla/Mexico), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City/England), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana/Mexico), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Clarence Goodson (Brondby/Denmark), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim/Germany), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg/Germany)

    MIDFIELDERS (10):
Michael Bradley (Roma/Italy), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana/Mexico), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Maurice Edu (Bursaspor/Turkey), Stuart Holden (Bolton/England), Jermaine Jones (Schalke/Germany), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht/Belgium), Brek Shea (Stoke City/England), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim/Germany), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)
