More than a few boxing fans seem to have been taken in by the soft matchmaking that Bob Arum has done for Miguel Cotto since his loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2009. Arum put Cotto in with three consecutive banged up or old fighters in the past three years – Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito – to give the appearance that Cotto has improved. He hasn’t.Cotto is just as shot as he was after the Margarito and Pacquiao losses.

Arum put Cotto in with Foreman, a fighter with no power and a bad leg, and Cotto was able to pick up his title. As far as Cotto’s vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. goes, it’s going to be a mismatch. Cotto hasn’t improved, he can’t box and he’s skin that tears if you hit consistently for any length of time. It’s going to be a bloodbath on May 5th with Mayweather battering and busting up Cotto along the same lines as Margarito in the first Cotto-Margarito fight.
