No World Cup? There's always Copa America Consensus is that the US was robbed of the 2022 World Cup. Well, here comes the next best thing. And it even comes six years earlier! The president of the Ecuadorean soccer federation, whose brother is on the CONMEBOL executive committee, told Mexican media that the USA is a potential candidate to host the 2016 Copa América in celebration of the South American confederation's 100-year anniversary. Chiriboga noted that the special edition of the 2016 Copa América would feature 16 teams: 10 from South America 6 from CONCACAF. Apparently there would be a qualification process to determine the six CONCACAF nations. Four groups of four teams with Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and the USA in separate groups? Fans will flock. If US fans thought that was big news, the Ecuadorean chief also mentioned that the US would likely get an inivitation to participate in the 2015 Copa América in Brazil. http://www.mlssoccer.com/blog/smorgasborg/2012/01/27/no-world-cup-theres-always-copa-america
Re: 100th Anniversary Special Copa America Copa Panamericana 2016: CONCACAF leadership traveling to Brazil for negotiations Various Mexican websites revealed today that a pair of CONCACAF Executive Committee members flew down to Brazil on CONMEBOL President Nicolas Leoz’s invitation, in order to attend the second leg of the 2012 Copa Libertadores Final and proceed with discussions on the 2016 “Copa América.” Unsurprisingly, they focused on the question of which North American country would be selected to host the tournament, with South American officials reportedly sharing Hawit’s preference for the United States. http://www.bigsoccer.com/soccer/usa...dership-traveling-to-brazil-for-negotiations/

Kick Off: Not so fast on those Copa America plans Hey man, got a minute? Just got a quick favor to ask. We’re CONMEBOL, your South American brothers in soccer, and in a few years we’re going to put on a huge 100-year anniversary of Copa America, this absolutely epic soccer tournament. It’s gonna be a huge, huge bash. You’ll love it. Only one problem here, man. We need a place to do it. Your house is cool, right? Not quite, it appears. One day after the governing body for South American soccer dropped the news that it intends to stage the 2016 Copa America on US soil, the governing bodies for both CONCACAF and U.S. Soccer fired back with statements that, as expected, clearly implied that yeah, they should have asked first. "While the idea of a Centennial tournament with some of the best teams in the hemisphere is certainly intriguing, it is not something we have agreed to host or participate in at this time,” U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said in a statement. “As CONCACAF stated, there are still a number of discussions that need to take place with CONMEBOL. “U.S. Soccer would also need to be involved in discussions about hosting the tournament. We're looking forward to those discussions in the near future." http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/10/26/kick-not-so-fast-those-copa-america-plans
Copa América Centenario PASADENA, Calif. – Work toward creating a tournament for national teams across the Americas, to celebrate the 100th birthday of South America's confederation, is continuing, CONCACAF's president told a Rose Bowl gathering Wednesday afternoon. Jeffrey Webb said CONCACAF, the governing body for soccer in North and Central America and the Caribbean, and CONMEBOL, which runs soccer in South America, are hoping FIFA will approve a joint Copa Centenario (Centenary Cup) for 2016. “We are looking at possible tournaments in the future. One, of course, is 2016 with CONMEBOL,” said Webb, who was elected last May to succeed Jack Warner as CONCACAF's president. “We are continuing to explore, and, hopefully, we'll be able to get permission from FIFA so we will be able to have this tournament, not only in 2016, but all teams will be able to have their full selection [of first-choice players].” A proposed 16-nation tournament, to be played in the United States, was revealed in October by CONMEBOL, but CONCACAF quickly pushed back on the announcement, saying it was premature. The event would include all 10 South American nations, the US, Mexico and four more CONCACAF nations. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/02/20/concacaf-still-keen-joint-16-team-copa-america-2016

Copa America Centenario a go? CONCACAF, CONMEBOL to make "historic" joint announcement The long-rumored Copa América Centenario tournament in the United States looks like it's about to become a reality. CONCACAF announced on Monday that the confederation will hold a joint press conference with CONMEBOL on Thursday "to make a historic announcement" in Miami, the home base of CONCACAF. Reports of the South American federation holding its biggest international tournament on US soil – which would include both the US and Mexican national teams – have been circulating since 2012, with various degrees of political wrangling supposedly holding up the process. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...acaf-conmebol-make-historic-joint-announcemen

CSA president says Canadians should focus on qualifying for Copa America, not bellyaching over the process On Thursday morning, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF made it official. The Copa America will be pan-American tournament in 2016. There were shouts of joy, as the lucrative American and Mexican television markets will be ensured marquee match-ups between the two CONCACAF powers and the big boys from South America. Of course, the Americans and Mexicans would get two automatic qualifying spots for Copa America. It makes good business and sporting sense. But, when it come to the remaining CONCACAF slots in the Copa America… it doesn’t seem very equitable to Canada. The winners of the Centro America tourney (which, by nature of geography, Canada doesn’t participate in) and the winner of the Caribbean championship (which, by nature of geography, Canada doesn’t participate in) each get spots in the Copa America. That leaves two spots, which will be determined in a playoff of top teams from the 2015 Gold Cup. http://www.reddit.com/tb/24jk0x
