    Michigan freshmen will return

After losing two players to the NBA, Michigan will have its other two potential NBA players back.

Forward Glenn Robinson III and center Mitch McGary both decided Wednesday to return to Michigan for their sophomore years instead of heading to the pros.

Gary Harris to return to Spartans

Michigan State's hopes to contend for a Big Ten title next season got a boost Thursday when Gary Harris announced he's coming back for his sophomore season.

"Playing in the NBA is definitely a goal of mine, and something that I've always dreamed of, but those dreams can wait for another day," Harris said in a statement released by the school. "I think additional experience and maturity will be huge in my development as a player. I have other dreams of things I want to accomplish, both as a player and as a team at Michigan State. I love college life, and I'm no hurry to move on."

Adreian Payne has not announced whether he is entering the NBA draft or coming back for his senior season. If Payne returns, the Spartans likely would be regarded as one of the top teams in college basketball.

Harris became the first player in program history to be named Big Ten freshman of the year and to be voted MVP by his teammates. He averaged nearly 13 points a game, ranking second on the team, despite playing through shoulder and back injuries.

    Andre Roberson entering NBA draft

People within Michigan State's basketball program, including coach Tom Izzo, and those on the outside expected Adreian Payne to skip his senior season because teams in the league projected him to be a first-round pick.

"Coach did think so," Payne said. "A lot of people did."

    Darius Paul headed to Illinois

Western Michigan freshman forward Darius Paul announced on Twitter on Saturday that he will follow in his older brother Brandon's footsteps and transfer to Illinois.

Darius Paul, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward, was the MAC Freshman of the Year averaging 10.4 points and 5.7 rebounds last season. He decided to transfer because of a coaching staff change and the desire to play at a higher level, according to his mother.

    Report:
Big Ten payouts will be largest in conference history
Big Ten Network primetime schedule announced

Being a member of the Big Ten Conference continues to have its benefits.

Among them, of course: loads and loads of cash.

According to a report by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, each Big Ten school will receive $25.7 million from the conference this year, the highest payout in the Big Ten’s 117-year history.

What’s more: $7.6 million will come straight from the Big Ten Network, the conference’s delve into a Big Ten-only cable television channel that launched in August 2007. The schools also received $10.9 million apiece from the conference’s television deals with ABC and ESPN, according to the Post-Dispatch report.

In 2012, the schools received a payout of $24.6 million, with $8.1 million coming from the Big Ten Network.

    2013-14 College Basketball Conference Snapshot:
    Big Ten Conference

The college basketball calendar is getting moved up with Midnight Madness shifting from mid-October into September. The look ahead to the 2013-14 season has also been moved up as Athlon starts to take stock for the upcoming year in college basketball.

The Big Ten was the nation’s top conference in 2012-13 with four teams reaching the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Although the league couldn’t take home a title, Michigan reached the national title game.

    1. MICHIGAN STATE (27-9, 13-5, NCAA Sweet 16)
    Key players gone: Derrick Nix

Top returners: Keith Appling, Branden Dawson, Gary Harris, Adreian Payne, Travis Trice, Denzel Valentine

Nix is the only one of the top seven scorers gone from a team that went 27-9. Harris considered the draft, but the smooth-shooting guard returned after averaging 12.9 points per game and 45.6 shooting from the field. Payne took his decision down to the wire, but his return gives Tom Izzo a veteran team with Final Four potential.
