    Largest-ever field,
increased prize money highlight 2013 US Open Cup

The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup turns 100 this year, and the grand old event is celebrating with the biggest, richest party of its long history.

US Soccer released details of the 2013 edition of the Open Cup on Tuesday, revealing that the event will include 68 teams – four more than last year and the most in the event's modern era – from across the spectrum of amateur, semipro and professional levels when it kicks off on May 7.

And the prize money for the tournament winner has more than doubled from last year, rising from $100,000 to a cool quarter of a million dollars. The payouts for runner-up and top finishers from each lower division have also increased to $60,000 and $15,000, respectively.

The process of determining the host venues for the tournament's latter rounds, which has come under some criticism in the past, has been adjusted for 2013. Now a coin flip will be used instead of the sealed-bid process, while random selection will be used to decide home teams for the rest of the tourney

D.C. United, Real Salt Lake storm into US Open Cup final
    [IMG]

    1. NEW LOOK D.C. MARCH TO FINAL: If every MLS game was an elimination match, D.C. United might be competing for the Supporters’ Shield right now. Instead, the team ranked last in the league can console themselves with a place in the Open Cup final. Dwayne De Rosario was able to capitalize on a Sean Johnson fumble for the first goal while Nick DeLeon scored a second just after the break to make the final score 2-0. The only dampener on DC’s evening? Luis Silva left the game early with a suspected concussion.

    2. RSL TO HOST FINAL: Save the date! We now know the final will be held on Oct. 1 at Rio Tinto stadium after Real Salt Lake beat the Portland Timbers 2-1. If this was the tactical game many suggested it would be, then Jason Kreis came out on top thanks to the second half introduction of Joao Plata, who proceeded to score a superb game-winning goal. Of course there were also some top saves from Nick Rimando, who claims the job isn’t finished yet: “Our goal wasn’t to get to the final, it’s to win it.”
