    It was every front-runner's nightmare.

Top-seeded Gonzaga ran into a No. 16 seed that wasn't playing like one, a crowd itching for an upset and the very real prospect of making history in a most embarrassing way.

Somehow, the Zags maneuvered their way out of that mess Thursday with a 64-58 win over Southern University, but not before they provided plenty of fodder for all those who wondered whether that small school from the small conference really belonged at the top of the West Region bracket.

Top-ranked Gonzaga throttles Saint Mary's to claim WCC crown

Not long after top-ranked Gonzaga received the West Coast Conference tournament trophy, an arena full of Zags fans started a chant of No. 1!

Big, deep, athletic, tough-minded, not to mention dominating and willing to play defense -- it'd be hard to argue against them.

Kelly Olynyk had 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Gonzaga bolstered its case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament by routing Saint Mary's 65-51 in the West Coast Conference final Monday night.

    NCAA won't sanction San Diego

The NCAA has accepted USD's submission of a secondary violation in the Brandon Johnson game-fixing case and will not impose sanctions against the school or its basketball program.

The NCAA said Tuesday that it found no improper conduct by any member of the university's staff or any other athletes.

Johnson and nine others were charged in federal court with running a sports betting business to fix West Coast Conference games.

No. 15 Gonzaga tops Bryant 100-76 in season opener

Sam Dower spent the last few seasons backing up star Kelly Olynyk.

Now the 6-foot-9 senior knows its his time to shine for the 15th-ranked Bulldogs.

Dower had 21 points and 17 rebounds in Gonzaga's season-opening 100-76 win over Bryant on Saturday night. It was his second career double-double. The victory, before a sellout crowd of 6,000, was Gonzaga's 10th consecutive in a McCarthey Athletic Center season opener.

Bell leads No. 11 Gonzaga past Coppin St 86-51

If the first three weeks of the college basketball season revealed anything about the Gonzaga Bulldogs, it's that they won't struggle to score.

But allowing 82 points a game in three days at the Maui Invitational allowed coach Mark Few to turn the No. 11 Bulldogs' 86-51 romp over Coppin State on Sunday night into a lesson on rebounding and defense.
