Big 12 reportedly exploring alliance with ACC and 2 other leagues
    [IMG]

In an effort to reap the benefits of conference expansion without actually adding more teams, the Big 12 is exploring an alliance with the ACC and two other unspecified leagues, according to Kirk Bohls.

The move is only considered to be in its exploratory stages at this point, but any deal would include football and basketball, with the potential to later expand to other sports.

One year later, the Longhorn Network still creates frustration for Texas fans
    [IMG]

On August 26th, the Longhorn Network will reach its one year anniversary. Unfortunately, the Network gets more coverage for its lack of carrier distribution and rivals’ vitriol from administration, coaches and fans. The Longhorn Network is the modern day Charlie Brown. It just can’t win.

On the distribution front, saying that negotiations between ESPN and carriers are moving at a snail’s pace would be an improvement from where they are at now. Comcast, a large cable provider in Houston, and ESPN negotiated a new deal in January without the mention of the Longhorn Network being discussed. DIRECTV has even gone so far as to insult the network stating that “two UT Football games do not constitute a network.”

    Angel Rodriguez leaving K-State

The final image that Kansas State fans will have of Angel Rodriguez in a Wildcat uniform will be an air ball at the buzzer in an NCAA tournament game against La Salle that could have prevented a massive upset loss.

The Wildcats' starting point guard said Monday that he wants to transfer closer to his mother and two younger brothers, who still live in his native Puerto Rico.

    Hunter Mickelson going to Kansas

Sophomore forward Hunter Mickelson is transferring from Arkansas to Kansas, where he will sit out next season and have two years of eligibility remaining.

Mickelson was a target of the Jayhawks coming out of high school, but opted to play for the Razorbacks. The 6-foot-10 forward started 20 of the 31 games he played last season, averaging 5.5 points and 3.5 rebounds while leading the team with 39 blocks.

    Angel Rodriguez transfers to Miami

It didn't take long for Miami to find a replacement for Shane Larkin.

The Hurricanes signed point guard Angel Rodriguez, a transfer from Kansas State, on Wednesday after a tour of the campus.

Big 12 expansion options limited by ACC grant of rights
    [IMG]

If the Big 12 does decide that they want to expand, it will have to focus efforts on members of the American Athletic Conference, the former Big East that will end up housing many former members of Conference USA. With the departure of Louisville to the ACC, the number of appealing options for the Big 12 has never been lower.

Cincinnati is still on the table as a possibility, but otherwise the Big 12 would have to look into expanding into Florida or bringing back former members of the SWC like SMU or Houston.

Florida schools like Central Florida or South Florida would be appealing because they could help open up the fertile state of Florida to Big 12 recruiting efforts, but they wouldn't bring enough television money to the table to make them viable options based on what Bowlsby has been saying.

SEC, Big XII To Officially Tip Off
    Hoops Challenge In November

With the SEC/Big East Challenge dying — right along with the Big East as we knew it — the Southeastern Conference has found a new league to play against in the early part of each basketball season. The SEC confirmed today what had been rumored for months — the Big XII/SEC Challenge will begin play in 2013-14.

The two leagues also recently partnered in taking control of the Sugar Bowl, which should turn into a fast-flowing revenue stream for both conferences.

Naturally, ESPN is behind the new hoops challenge. All 10 Big XII teams will take part, while only 10 of the SEC’s 14 schools get to participate (for obvious reasons). Like the old Big East challenge, the title of the series will flip-flop each year with the SEC getting top billing next season.

“The ability to showcase SEC basketball in this kind of conference competition makes this a unique and exciting event for our coaches, student-athletes and fans,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said via press release. “We are pleased to be able to work with the Big XII and ESPN to highlight the sport of men’s basketball.”

Here are the matchups for Year One of the Big XII/SEC Challenge.

Thursday, November 14th — Texas Tech at Alabama
Monday, December 2nd — Vanderbilt at Texas, Auburn at Iowa State
Thursday, December 5th — Ole Miss at KSU, WVU at Missouri, TCU at MSU
Friday, December 6th — South Carolina at OSU, Kentucky vs. Baylor (at Arlington, Texas)
Tuesday, December 10th — Kansas at Florida
Saturday, December 21st — Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma (at Houston, Texas)

(Arkansas, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee are the SEC squads not taking part.)

    Texas' Julien Lewis to transfer

In a little more than two months, the Texas basketball program, which this past season failed to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in 15 years, has lost its top three scorers, all of whom were underclassmen.

Julien Lewis is the latest to depart, team officials confirmed Tuesday.

Howard's hiring will become official once he signs a formal contract.

Athlon 2013-14 College Basketball Conference Snapshot:
    Big 12

    1. KANSAS (31-6, 14-4, NCAA Sweet 16)

Key players gone: Elijah Johnson, Ben McLemore, Travis Releford, Jeff Withey, Kevin Young

Top returning players: Perry Ellis, Naadir Tharpe

New faces: Tarik Black (transfer from Memphis) Joel Embiid (freshman), Conner Frankamp (freshman), Brannen Green (freshman), Landen Lucas (redshirt), Wayne Selden (freshman), Andrew Wiggins (freshman)
Kansas lost all five starters, but the Jayhawks had as good an offseason as any team. Kansas added the nation’s No. 1 prospect in Wiggins, a 6-8 wing who could be an elite defender on the college level. Moreover, Wiggins’ signing boosted a recruiting class that was already one of the nation’s best with three other top-50 recruits. Kansas also added coveted Memphis transfer Tarik Black, a solid big man who will add experience to the young roster. The Jayhawks also will expect a breakout season from Ellis, who averaged 5.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in 13.6 minutes last season.

    L.J. Rose transferring to Houston

Former Baylor guard L.J. Rose is transferring to Houston, the Cougars confirmed in a news release Friday.

A Houston native, Rose will seek a waiver from the NCAA that would allow him to be eligible for the upcoming season. Rose said his mother, Marilyn, has been stricken with lupus and that the main reason he left Baylor was to be closer to her.

"Family has always been the most important thing to me," Rose told ESPN.com. "With my mother's situation, [Houston] was the obvious choice."

Rose said he also considered San Diego State, Georgetown and Arizona. He's expected to contend for a starting position on a Cougars squad that could contend for an NCAA tournament berth next season.
