The Iowa Barnstormers entered the 2013 season with a new look, a new attitude and many new players. Saturday night the "new" theme continued as Iowa defeated the Chicago Rush for the first time in the last 5 meetings by a score of 63-41.

The Barnstormers dominated all aspects of the game as they never trailed. Iowa jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead as Quarterback J.J. Raterink connected with Receivers Marco Thomas and Darius Reynolds for two quick scores. Raterink was in mid-season form, completing 22 of 30 passes for 257 yards and 7 touchdowns. In addition, Raterink also ran for an eighth score. Meanwhile, Reynolds led the way with 4 touchdown receptions and the ‘Stormers defense forced 3 turnovers.

By the end of the first half, Iowa had increased its lead to 39-21. Iowa scored two touchdowns in a 12 second span in the second quarter as Raterink connected with Collin Taylor for a score. On the ensuing kickoff, DB Ter'Ran Benton picked up a loose ball and ran it into the end zone for a net recovery touchdown. Benton led the Iowa defense by also contributing 5 tackles and an interception.

The second half was more of the same as the Barnstormers outscored the Rush by 24-20. Kicker Phil Marfuggi, a new addition this week to the Iowa roster struggled early, but rallied connecting on his last 6 PAT attempts along with a 25 yard field goal to close the scoring for Iowa.

The Barnstormers two-game season opening road trip continues next Saturday night March 30 when they face the New Orleans VooDoo for the first time in franchise history. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm and the game will be aired live on CBS Sports Network. Iowa's home opener is scheduled for Friday, April 5th when they take on the Spokane Shock at 7:05pm.
