Conference USA has struck a deal to put a team in the Military Bowl, sources said Monday.

The seventh selection from the ACC was contracted to play in the game against an at-large team before C-USA completed the deal to fill the spot.

C-USA and bowl officials will determine which selection from C-USA will play in the bowl, the sources said.

    Navy charges 3 football players

The U.S. Naval Academy on Wednesday charged three midshipmen -- all current or former football players -- with sexually assaulting a female student at an off-campus house in Annapolis more than a year ago.

The academy said in a news release that the male midshipmen are being charged with two violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. One charge involves rape, sexual assault or other sexual misconduct. The other is for making a false official statement.

The academy did not identify the three male students, and it was not immediately clear if they have an attorney.

Two of the students were football players this past season, but they are not on the team anymore. Another is still on the team, but he has been suspended pending the outcome of the case.

"The case is still in the pre-trial phase, so any further comment on this ongoing investigation would be inappropriate," Cmdr. John Schofield, an academy spokesman, said in a statement.

The case has brought renewed focus to how the nation's military academies handle reports of sexual assaults. The service academies have struggled for years with sexual assault and harassment allegations, and a string of sexual assault cases has recently drawn attention in Congress and at the Pentagon and The White House. Many of the assault cases involve alcohol.

President Barack Obama addressed the sexual assault problem when he spoke at the academy's commissioning ceremony last month. The president said those who commit sexual assault threaten the trust and discipline that make the military strong.

The Louisiana Tech athletic department released photos of the new helmet design for the football team in 2013, along with a preview of the special helmet the Bulldogs will wear in their Heart of Dallas Classic game against Army on Sept. 28 in the Cotton Bowl. The game will also serve as Louisiana Tech's annual Military Appreciation Day, with extra promotions to highlight the men and women who serve in the U.S. military.

    Terry Williams violated team rules

4-foot-9 Jayson Carter debuts for Rice

With Saturday's game under control, Rice gave the smallest player in the Football Bowl Subdivision a moment in the spotlight.

Rice handed the ball to Jayson Carter, a 4-foot-9, 135-pound walk-on running back, late in the fourth quarter of the Owls' 45-7 win over UTEP.

Carter, who has a genetic disorder that hinders his growth, took the handoff from the left of the quarterback, carried it to the right tackle and was brought down for a 1-yard gain.

"I did what I was supposed to … I didn't get negative yards," Carter said, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Carter has worked with the scout team for three years but made his college debut against UTEP.

"That young man is here every day busting his tail on the scout team. He deserves it," Rice coach David Bailiff said, according to the Chronicle. "I'm thrilled we got Jayson into a Division I football game."

Jameill Showers out vs. Texas A&M

UTEP quarterback Jameill Showers won't play in his anticipated return to Texas A&M after injuring his right shoulder in a loss to Rice.

Showers lost a battle for the Texas A&M starting job the preseason before Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012.

Carl Pelini resigns at Florida Atlantic

Florida Atlantic coach Carl Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis resigned Wednesday.

A source said the coaches attended a recent social event at which marijuana was used. Although this appears to be an isolated incident, all involved determined it was in the best interest of the program that the coaches resign, the source said.

Athletic director Pat Chun said Pelini and Rekstis tendered their resignations after he confronted both coaches with reports relating to their use of illegal drugs.

ECU wears down Ohio to win Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl

Vintavious Cooper took over the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl in the fourth quarter in a performance reminiscent of a former East Carolina running back.

Just don't bring up that comparison to Cooper.

The senior rushed for a career-best 198 yards and scored two touchdowns, leading the Pirates to a 37-20 victory over Ohio on Monday.

QB Rakeem Cato shines as Marshall beats Maryland in Military Bowl

Maryland had just marched 99 yards to take a fourth-quarter lead, and it was up to Marshall to either respond or succumb.

"These kids never flinched," Marshall coach Doc Holliday said. "The one thing I like about this group is that it didn't matter."

With standout quarterback Rakeem Cato leading the way, the Thundering Herd scored two touchdowns in the final 12 minutes to pull out a 31-20 victory Friday in the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman.

    La. Tech hires Manny Diaz

Manny Diaz, who was fired as defensive coordinator by Texas two games into the 2013 season, has accepted the same position at Louisiana Tech, the school announced Tuesday.

"I am very excited Manny Diaz is joining our staff," Bulldogs coach Skip Holtz said Tuesday in a release. "He brings great experiences with a lot of success at a lot of different stops. He brings excitement, a passion for the game, plenty of experience and a reputation for success that precedes him."

UAB to hire Bill Clark as head coach

Jacksonville State announced Tuesday that head coach Bill Clark is leaving to assume the same position at UAB, which had yet to officially announce the move.

Clark led Jacksonville State to the Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals last season, compiling an 11-4 mark in his only season.

He will replace Garrick McGee, who joined Bobby Petrino's staff to run the offense at Louisville. McGee served as Petrino's offensive coordinator at Arkansas.

    Dan McCarney getting 5-year deal

    - North Texas coach Dan McCarney is getting a new five-year contract after leading the Mean Green to nine wins and their first bowl victory in 11 seasons.

School officials said Tuesday, only hours before spring practice began, that the deal was imminent. Attorneys were reviewing the new contract that will take McCarney through the 2018 season.

"What they did was, in putting a contract in place really, is showing appreciation for changing the culture at this place. It's showing appreciation for how we do it, and the way we've done it on the field, in the classroom, in Denton, and how we handle things," McCarney said. "I think it's a sign of support for all of my guys, all of my staff, my program, our program. ... I appreciate that opportunity to stay here. I'm not looking to leave. I love this place."
