Despite a shaky start, two goals from Cam Weaver were enough to see off Panamanian side Arabe Unido 2-1 in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday night. It was not a pleasant affair, with a questionable penalty awarded to the visitors in the first half and seven yellow cards in the second. After the match, Dynamo head coach Dom Kinnear didn’t mince his word: “The team that had more respect for the game won the game.”

Two wins out of two and with both their remaining games to be played at Sporting Park? Things are looking good for Sporting Kansas City. A brace from Soony Saad led SKC to a 2-0 win over Honduran side CD Olimpia in the CCL. While there’s still work to be done, SKC manager Peter Vermes acknowledges “we’re in a good place.”

While the Earthquakes are by no means out of the MLS playoff race, the focus now shifts to a potential run in Champions League. Interim coach Mark Watson seems ready to give it a go when the team returns to action Wednesday night against Heredia in Guatemala: “We’re definitely trying to get hardware in the CCL”

    NASL in the CCL?
    [IMG][IMG]

The CONCACAF Champions League resumed play on Tuesday night, with five teams from Major League Soccer among the eight groups of three teams. The Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo qualified as champion and runner up of MLS, Sporting Kansas City qualified as the U.S. Open Cup winner, San Jose as the Supporters Shield winners, and the Montreal Impact qualified as winners of Canada's Amway Canadian Championship.

But what about the possibility of an NASL team taking part in the CCL? Some around the league would like to see it happen, and there are currently two paths to that end, a team either winning the Lamar Hunt Open Cup, or winning the Canadian Championship.

The Carolina RailHawks advanced as far as the quarterfinals of the Open Cup this year, and FC Edmonton played in the semi-finals of the Canadian Cup, falling in a two-game set to Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

RailHawks coach Colin Clarke would like to see an NASL qualify via another route.

"I think the NASL champion should qualify," said Clarke. "The standards and the quality of some of the teams from some of the smaller countries are certainly not up to the standards of NASL."
