Let's bring the majority of what Tumblr talks about here to S2.

The following is a great video of a debate between Jim Norton and Jezebel.com blogger Lindy West. It's a pretty good watch whether you consider yourself anti-rape joke or are Daniel Tosh.

What do you all think? Do rape jokes and the casual use of the word "rape" (especially in sports and/or videogames) contribute to what many people call "rape culture"?

I find it ok as long as it's not in the middle of the rape. That's just rude

Personally, I don't find it funny or appropriate. If there are websites you can find content to enjoy that aren't here, I'm ok with that.

I think rape jokes are funny, but I've never been raped. That could potentially change my outlook.

This is how I felt for a long time. Same with racist jokes. I didn't get raped and I'm still white. So what changed? I don't know. I think I started paying attention to what people were talking about.

Im white and I think white jokes are funny. Actually most jokes that make fun of a sterotype are funny IMO. Rape doesn't make fun of a sterotype, so I don't put them in the same category. I would tell black jokes to my black friends but I would never tell a rape joke to a raped friend.

The first amendment is there to protect speech that offends people. Not much need for the first amendment if nobody ever says anything offensive.

As I think about it, rape jokes could help bring attention to some bad shit that happens. For instance, what if the rest of the world started telling rape jokes involving Afghan men and little boys?

Huh? Just because you're white doesn't mean you've encountered racism

There might be more racism towards white people than any other race right now.

    With whom?

    Men who find rape funny?

    Rapists?

    Women who have been raped?

Women who have not been raped but organize their lives (as most women do) around supposedly reducing the possibility?

Women who are threatened with rape when they post online something a man doesn't like, even when it's not remotely conneced with rape (and nearly every female blogger or online poster has received rape threats)?

Men who have been raped and told they are "unmanly" as a result?

I think when you throw words like that around it desensitizes us. I hear sports announcers routinely use that word during broadcasts like whatever play happened was somehow equal to this horrendous act of violence against an innocent person. It makes me sick to my stomach. And I just don't think there's anything funny about rape so, to me, there's no such thing as a rape "joke".

You hear sports broadcasters use the word "rape" routinely? In describing a play that happened? I have never once heard the word used, and I'm certain if it was used on TNT, ABC, NBC, CBS, ESPN that the person who used the word would be suspended or lose their job.
