Everyone keeps trumpeting the need for a 3rd PG. I can't disagree that it'd be a nice luxury, but I have trouble envisioning any of the names being bandied about signing up for a 0-minute gig.
Personally I think I'd like to see us bring in a distributor. The thing I liked about Maynor was that he could play with Lillard, and let Dame play off the ball a bit. I don't really see CJ filling that role, so I think he'll end up being more like a backup shooting guard/scoring punch off the bench. I think Lillard can play the point while CJ slides in at shooting guard, but I don't think the opposite would work as well.
Am I the only one that thinks Earl Watson should be a bigger free agency get than people have talked about? He's still one of the best on-ball defenders in the league, and he's your prototypical pass-first point guard, with veteran experience, that can be bought for veterans minimum, and still log a solid 10-15 mpg, where you know at the very least, he's not going to screw things up on either end of the court.
I thought Watson made a few million last year I think he would want more than the minimum. He is the exact type of PG I'd like us to get just not sure if he would accept some DNP's or a minimum deal.
Right now we have one PG on the roster. We need one more. They can experiment with McCollum at PG in the summer league, but the honeymoon period with him will be short lived if they try to to convert him. At least in the short term. He is a shooting guard who can fill in at the back up PG when injuries occur.
But what if CJ or DL get hurt? Who do you want holding down the fort until he comes back? You can't have too many good players on a team.
Why'd they let Maynor go? He was a great fit for our team, he was a legit "PG" and allowed Damian to play some SG, which he excelled at.
Extending the Q.O. to Maynor would have meant less cap space. That he signed for the bi-annual excepting for the Wiz tells me there wasn't much of a market for him. Either way, it's no big loss.
I am surprised he only waited 12 hours to test the market. He must have really wanted to play there. Lots of teams would have given him the bi-annual.
There are probably 30 other b/u pg's needing jobs this summer too. Although Maynor was a good fit, he wasn't "Great" by any means. We'll find another Patty Mills to ride the pine here.
I don't know what peoples definition of good, great and etc are (everyone is different) but I will say that Maynor is an above-average NBA player. Slightly but that is how I feel. I wouldn't have mind keeping him but I also think it isn't much to worry about. We do need a 3rd PG but that guy is going to be inactive for a lot of NBA games. That isn't Maynor.
