Manchester United opened the defence of their Barclays Under-21 Premier League title with defeat by Liverpool in an exciting encounter at the Salford City Stadium.

Larnell Cole, who scored a hat-trick for United against the Merseysiders in their Barclays U21 Premier League semi-final last year, opened the scoring before Liverpool's Jordan Ibe equalised with a solo effort.

Adam Morgan and Fabio Borini extended the away side's advantage with just 20 minutes played, but England Under-21 international Jesse Lingard pulled one back for Warren Joyce's side before the break.

The second half was more sedate by comparison, but Borini, who was an unused substitute in the senior side's opening Barclays Premier League match against Stoke City last weekend, took the ball around United goalkeeper Ben Amos late on to tap in and seal a memorable win for Alex Inglethorpe's charges.
