God help us. We have the best collection of 3-point shooters in Blazer history, but now our power forward wants to start lofting them up, too. http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports....t-more-3-pointers/?ocid=Yahoo&partner=ya5nbcs
We had this discussion over the summer after Lillard alluded to it in an interview. For LA to shoot more 3's, it could simply mean he intends to take 1 every other game. Not like 2 or 3 per game. At least I hope it doesn't.
I have no idea how many he wants to take, but the point is he doesn't need to be taking any. We have plenty of other players who can hit the 3. We need Aldridge around the basket to score and rebound where he can use his height advantage and draw fouls.
I agree with this sentiment, however I can imagine that opposing teams will use centers who have no desire to leave the paint to guard Lamarcus. It makes sense under these circumstances to drift over to the corner 3 where he will be unguarded.
Effective field goal percentage. If he hits them at a clip of 33%, it's like he's shooting 50% from a step inside the line (which he doesn't). So it'd be a significant improvement if the reward half of a risk/reward scenario where instead of lobbing 21 footers at 40%, he's lobbing three pointers at 33% which scores points as if he were shooting 50% from 21 feet. If you could get LA to shoot 50% from 21 feet, wouldn't you want that? Btw this is why sabas was actually pretty awesome as a center who only shot 32.8% from three. It was like a 2-point shot at 46% which you totally take at that distance.
What's interesting about that chart (with the article) is that Dirk Nowitzki doesn't actually shoot that many threes. Look: if Aldridge was currently a strictly low-post guy, then this would be an odd thing to say. Or if he intended to go all Uncle Cliffy on us, also bad. But the point is he's already shooting a ton of LONG two-pointers, so why not go back a few feet and get an extra point? And Robin Lopez actually has a rudimentary low post game, so it would be okay to clear out some space for him. Of course Leonard is also saying the same thing. Maybe we need to get Andre Miller back so we have SOMEBODY who posts up.
Im ok with even an average of one 3 point shot per game. Im sure he has the range (or can get there) and if he can hit them at a 33% clip or so it opens things up even more and is one more weapon for the defense to worry about. BUT I would also like to additionally see the trade off of him posting up 2 more times a game versus a jumper. That combo would be even more effective
Precisely. I just hope that his shot selection gets dramatically redistributed. Last season I think he shot something like 7 shots from 16'-23', which is absurd. I'd be fine with him shooting 3s if he redistributes those seven shots so that two of them are 3-pointers, three of them are in the paint, and he only shoots two shots from 16'-23'. If he is shooting 5+ shots from 16'-23', and taking 3-pointers on top of that, kick him in the nuts and trade him for Drew Gooden and Channing Frye.
Must be something wrong with me. I like to actually watch a few games and see how a guy is playing before going all snark-fest on him. I know....CRAZY.
Because that's a more difficult shot, with a lower success rate, and every time he misses he's not under the basket for a rebound. If he develops an affinity for the 3-pointer, he's practically useless as a power forward.
Kevin Love shoots threes. Is he useless? If LMA shoots a couple threes, that doesn't stop him from being inside 90% of the time if he wants.
Any time your bigs can hit a 3 gives the rest of your team a much easier time getting to the rim. Luke, Sheed, Sabas...
I think LMA should tweet the fans before every shot and ask us if he should take that shot. He'll quickly learn how smart we are.
Well it's not like he's in rebounding position when he's shooting those 18' jumpers. Might as well step back a few feet for the chance at 50% more points. The increase in the degree of difficulty between an 18' shot and a 23' shot isn't that great.
I think it's better than the 20ft shots. All he needs to do is step back another couple feet and his patented 20 footer becomes a 3 pointer.
