Portland Timbers nab Steve Zakuani in Re-Entry Draft Stage 1; DC United get Sean Franklin, Bobby Boswell
    [IMG]

Stage 1 of the MLS Re-Entry Draft took place on Thursday, and delivered more surprises than ever before in its short history. The list of available players dropped from 68 to 57 before the draft began as more players chose to opt out in the hopes of renegotiating contracts with their clubs but, of those that remained, five were selected by clubs, a new record for the first round. The second round is set for Wednesday, Dec. 18.

Of those five, Steve Zakuani moving from the Seattle Sounders to his Cascadia rivals in Portland may have been the biggest story of the day. The Timbers had to trade promising defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste in exchange for the second pick in the draft and and Jorge Villafaña so that Zakuani could be reunited with his former Akron boss Caleb Porter and Zips teammate Darlington Nagbe. Porter had apparently been keen on Zakuani for a while, but the move was made even more imperative due to the news that Rodney Wallace will miss a large portion of the 2014 season after undergoing surgery on a torn ACL.

The Sounders have lost Zakuani and Mauro Rosales in the past few days -- as well as Marc Burch to the Colorado Rapids -- but on Thursday they picked up a valuable center back addition in the form of Chad Marshall from the Columbus Crew in exchange for allocation money and a third-round SuperDraft pick in 2015. All of which points towards the Seattle Sounders looking quite different in 2014, especially when you consider that only five players remain with the team from its inaugural season.

D.C. United took steps to address their troubling defensive issues on Thursday by taking two proven defenders in the Re-Entry Draft: Sean Franklin and Bobby Boswell. With United already looking stronger for 2014, the club now turns its attention to striking options and is apparently confident it can bring Conor Doyle over on a permanent deal.

While the Crew lost Marshall to the Sounders -- a move Crew boss Gregg Berhalter described as financially motivated -- they did bring in Daniel Paladini from the Chicago Fire in exchange for a fourth-round SuperDraft pick. The Colorado Rapids, meanwhile, could add a former player to their coaching staff.

The New York Red Bulls were not active in the Re-Entry Draft, but did chose to re-sign forward Andre Akpan. The club has also committed $2 million in order to build a new training facility for its academy and, possibly, a third-division outfit as well. The Red Bulls might be in need of a new left back soon though, as it seems Roy Miller could be on the move.

Dwayne De Rosario, David Ferreira highlight list of MLS players available for Stage 2 Re-Entry Draft

According to league rules, teams will have seven days to make a bona fide offer to the players they select in Stage 2 and if an agreement can't be reached, the club will hold the right of first refusal for that player in MLS.

Any players not picked up after Stage 2 become available to any MLS club on a first-come, first-served basis.

Three players on the current list – Pablo Mastroeni, Kevin Hartman and Chris Albright – have all announced their retirement, but are still included on the list should they decide to return to the game. If a team drafts any of these three players and he does decide to come out of retirement, that team will hold the right of first refusal.

Former league MVPs Dwayne De Rosario (2011), David Ferreira (2010) and Carlos Ruiz (2002) are all available for selection, as is Colorado Rapids midfielder/defender Brian Mullan, one of three players in league history to win five MLS Cup titles.

D.C. United’s offseason makeover continued Wednesday with another offensive shot in the arm after they picked up former New York and Real Salt Lake striker Fabian Espindola with the top pick in Stage 2 of the Re-Entry Draft. DC now have a week to extend a bona fide offer to Espindola – who scored at least nine goals in each of the past three seasons – in order to bring him to a club that’s made a slew of moves in the past few days after posting the worst regular season record in league history.

Toronto FC, meanwhile, made arguably the biggest splash of the day on Wednesday with the selection of former league MVP Dwayne De Rosario, the Canadian international who was let go by D.C. after the season. De Rosario, 36, spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons in Toronto before a falling out sent him to New York and eventually United, where he won the MLS MVP in 2011. De Rosario scored three goals in 24 appearances for DC last season, two years removed from his career year in 2011 that saw him win the Budweiser Golden Boot with 16 goals and 12

The Seattle Sounders selected two players in the draft amid an already tumultuous offseason, adding journeyman striker Chad Barrett in the first round and youngster Corey Hertzog in the second round.

The San Jose Earthquakes selected defender Shaun Francis with their first-round pick and then added former New York Red Bulls defender Brandon Barklage in the second round, while the Vancouver Whitecaps selected well-traveled midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy in the first round.
