    RUMOR:
BECKHAM WILL MEET CLAURE @HEAT'S GAME

MIAMI, May 28 (Reuters) - Former England captain David Beckham will visit Miami this week as he steps up his interest in owning a new Major League Soccer (MLS) team.

Beckham, who played for L.A. Galaxy in the MLS, has an option to create a new franchise in the North American league.

While the exact location is still to be decided, he will be in the Florida city to explore possibilities, according to former Miami mayor Manny Diaz.

Then, Spanish giants Barcelona, together with Miami-based Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure, tried to start a team but the project was called off due to "adverse market conditions".

A supporters group, calling itself MLS Miami Bid, told Reuters that Claure would be one of those meeting Beckham and that the pair planed to watch Miami Heat's NBA playoff game against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday.

    Beckham buzz grows:
soccer star tours Miami stadiums, meets mayor

David Beckham toured Sun Life Stadium Saturday morning, and then visited FIU Stadium for an hour and a half, signs that he has more than just a passing interest in Miami as a Major League Soccer expansion city.

While at FIU, Beckham was greeted by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who gave him and his manager Simon Fuller keys to the city. FIU Athletic Director Pete Garcia led Beckham on a tour of the stadium, and then the school made a formal power point presentation over lunch, touting FIU’s location, 20,000-seat soccer-ready stadium, and its largely Hispanic soccer-loving student population.

    Soccer on the bay?
Report says David Beckham eyeing potential waterfront stadium in Miami

If it materializes, it could become the most picturesque soccer stadium in the country, complete with a backdrop of cruise ships, yachts and the city skyline.

A report in The Miami Herald on Tuesday claims that David Beckham and his partners, who are looking into an MLS expansion team in Miami, have identified a "top potential site for a permanent soccer stadium for a new MLS team: Port Miami."

The outlet cites the Miami-Dade County's mayor's office, who confirmed the approach by Beckham's group, while making it clear that "talks with the county over the seaport site are still in their infancy."

"We said yes, we'd take a look at it," deputy mayor Chip Iglesias told the paper, singling out 25 acres on Dodge Island.

Miami-Dade County Commissioners to Vote on Potential Soccer Stadium Tuesday
    [IMG]

The vote could be the first step in bringing a Major League Soccer franchise to Miami, an effort spearheaded by former MLS star David Beckham.

"We are very excited about the opportunity of David putting together an ownership group and finalizing a stadium site in downtown Miami," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said last week. "We can't go to Miami without the right stadium solution. David understands that. The city understands that. That is an indisputable fact."

    MLS Commissioner Don Garber:
Announcement on Miami expansion will come in early February

PHILADELPHIA – Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber said Thursday that the league expects to make an announcement concerning David Beckham and a potential expansion franchise in Miami within the next 30 days, potentially inching the league closer to its 22nd franchise.

“I was down there this past weekend, and I’ve been down there a lot, working with potential ownership and trying to finalize a stadium plan,” Garber told media at the MLS SuperDraft. ”Right now, we’ve got a lot of work to do, and we’ll announce something in early February.”

David Beckham exercises MLS expansion option
    on future Miami franchise

David Beckham is getting back in the game with Major League Soccer.

The league announced Wednesday that the former LA Galaxy superstar has exercised his option for an MLS expansion team and will seek to build that team in Miami, a move rumored for months that now looks like a reality for soccer fans in South Florida.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber made the announcement with Beckham and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez during a press conference at Perez Art Museum Miami. Beckham’s ownership group will now work with MLS and local officials to finalize a deal for a world-class soccer stadium, but a timeline for when negotiations need to be completed or when a Miami team might join the league were not revealed.

The favored stadium site among Beckham’s group is reportedly Biscayne Bay’s PortMiami, but Beckham visited a number of sites last year, including SunLife Stadium, Marlins Park and the FIU stadium on the Florida International University campus.

According to a report in the Herald last year, roughly 25 acres of the county-owned PortMiami site could be made available – enough for a 25,000-seat stadium with expandable seating for various events – if the site is chosen.

Beckham 'asks PSG for MLS funding'

David Beckham has asked the wealthy Qatari owners of Paris Saint-Germain to help fund his new Major League Soccer franchise in Miami, according to Le Parisien.

Beckham, who was last month invited to a PSG charity function, hopes QSI will join him and backers Marcelo Claure and Simon Fuller in helping re-establish football in Florida's main city.

"Yes, David Beckham has asked us for help," Le Parisien quotes a QSI source as saying. "No decision has been taken yet."

Report reveals potential names, logo, kits for David Beckham's proposed Miami MLS expansion team
    [IMG]

David Beckham said he had some proposed names for his new Miami-based MLS expansion team when he met the media last week in South Florida, but it was anyone's guess at the time what that team might actually look like on the field.

On Wednesday, however, a local newspaper may have offered a glimpse into Miami's soccer future.

The Palm Beach Post published images of a jersey and a logo that the paper claims is "one of the logo designs used by the Beckham group in its presentations" in recent meetings with local officials and prospective investors. The report cites sources for three of the potential team names being entertained: Miami Vice, Miami Current and an undisclosed name tied to a corporate sponsor.

Beckham exploring possibility of joint MLS/UM stadium

David Beckham’s group is exploring the feasibility of building a soccer stadium that would be large enough to accommodate the University of Miami football team, and UM would have interest if the stadium meets the school’s requirements and if the Hurricanes can somehow escape their long Sun Life Stadium lease, according to sources on both sides.

Beckham’s group and UM have had preliminary discussions, but the Beckham camp and MLS likely need a couple of months to determine whether it’s realistic.
UM has told the Beckham camp that it needs a stadium with at least 40,000 seats to accommodate Hurricanes games; Beckham’s group initially has spoken of having 25,000 seats. UM also would need the stadium to have sufficient parking, large enough locker-rooms and enough suites.

UM wants no fewer than 40,000 seats because it has about 30,000 season-ticket holders and allots 6000 seats for students and another 4000 to sell to the visiting team.

Will David Beckham Name Team "Miami Fusion FC"?

Josh Deaver wanted to find out what David Beckham intends to call his MLS franchise, so he started digging around. And then he dug some more. And then he found some very interesting clues.

A recent trademark filing, submitted in June 2013 by InteliSport Inc., appears to signal a new incarnation of Miami's once-shuttered MLS franchise—Miami Fusion FC.

Contracted by the league in 2001 after four years of poor attendance and lack of profitability, the Fusion, along with the defunct Tampa Bay Mutiny, long represented the cautionary tale of American soccer in the southeast. Recently, however, the tide has turned. Orlando has been granted an MLS franchise and is slated to join the league prior to the 2015 season. Along with ongoing discussions with Arthur Blank, owner of NFL's Atlanta Falcons, Commissioner Don Garber has clearly made this southern revival a top priority for the league.

Fusion Heats Up: Could This Be MLS's Newest Logo?
ASN's Josh Deaver examines a new twist in what might be David Beckham's Major League Soccer team: a trademark update complete with a logo and a new slogan.

A recent update to the initial trademark claim, filed last Thursday—ironically, the same day ASN’s report was published—provides further insight into the potential branding strategies surrounding Beckham’s Miami project.

Miami-Dade mayor asks David Beckham’s group
to consider new soccer stadium site
    [IMG]

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez upended the negotiations with David Beckham and his investors Monday by proposing that the group consider building a Major League Soccer stadium on the downtown waterfront — but not at PortMiami.

As an alternative, Gimenez proposed filling a massive boat slip between Museum Park and AmericanAirlines Arena, which, according to the mayor, would create enough new land for a stadium as well as a pedestrian walkway along Biscayne Bay.

“Downtown Miami will greatly benefit from the creation of a grand waterfront park that will serve to bring our urban core closer to the water, providing a magnificent bay front walk along Biscayne Bay,” Gimenez wrote in a letter late Monday to Beckham’s real-estate adviser.

For David Beckham, latest soccer stadium site poses new challenges

If the notion of building a Major League Soccer stadium on PortMiami land seemed fraught with practical complications and political pitfalls, try putting one on water.

David Beckham and his investors are examining whether filling a deep boat slip with rocks, forever altering the jagged edges of downtown Miami’s shoreline, would work as a location for their planned stadium.

They’re likely to find at least as many challenges as they did for their first-choice port site. There are new costs to weigh, environmental and building permits from federal, state and local agencies to request — and not one, but two municipal governments to persuade.
