Joe Dumars plans to resign as president of the Detroit Pistons, possibly as soon as this week, according to sources. The Pistons had expected to make the playoffs after signing Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings last offseason. Detroit instead is 28-49 and out of playoff contention. Dumars took over in 2000, one year after retiring as a player, and immediately began making changes, culminating in an NBA title in 2004 and a return trip to the Finals the next season. Dumars tried to save Maurice Cheeks' job earlier this season, but Tom Gores insisted on a chance.
