Arsenal defeated Sp*rs, Coventry City, Liverpool, Everton, and defending champions Wigan en-route to the finals; about as difficult a route as they could've taken. In contrast Hull defeated Middlesbrough, Southend United, Brighton & Hove Albion (via replay), Sunderland, and Sheffield United to reach the finals.

Arsenal are pushing for their 11th FA Cup, having won four times previously under manager Arsène Wenger in 1998, 2002, 2003, and 2005. Former Aston Villa manager George Ramsay holds the record for FA Cup wins with six, followed by former Blackburn Rovers manager Thomas Mitchell (5) and former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson (5). Former Sheffield United manager John Nicholson won four FA Cups between 1899-1925. The Cup would be Arsenal's first silverware since moving from Highbury to Ashburton Grove in 2006.

Hull are in the FA Cup Final for the first time. In 1930 they reached the semi-finals. Hull have almost no silverware in their history, with one Football League One championship (1966) and two Football League Third Division North championships (1933, 1949). They finished runners-up for the 1984 Football League Trophy. The Cup would be the biggest achievement for manager Steve Bruce and arguably the most significant achievement in club history.
