In OTs, how about we increase the foul limit to 7? This has been a serious pet peeve of mine for years, and last night was just another instance of stupidity in my mind. Teams get extra TOs in OT. Why not fouls?
That's a great suggestion. One additional foul for each additional OT. But players who fouled out before the OT started are still out. Make it so, number one.
It's not a terrible idea, but how does this work? Does a player that fouled out in regulation get to come back in for OT? I heard another suggestion (I think it was Zach Lowe or maybe it was Kevin Pelton) but instead of fouling out you could charge a team a timeout if they want to elect to leave a player in. This would at least allow "important" players the chance to stay in the game, but also impose what could be a very steep tactical penalty - because we all know how important those timeouts end up in the last minute of regulation and OT.
Gotta read the whole thread. Easiest way to do it would be to track fouls the way they do timeouts; rather than counting how many used by each player, track how many remain, then increase that number by one at the beginning of any overtime period.
I like what PPlat suggested above. If they fouled out in regulation, they're out for good (so as to maintain consistency with the current handling of foul trouble), but in each OT session, they get are allowed one more. So if they have 5, they get two more before fouling out. If they still have 5 in the second OT, they get three more before fouling out, etc. Edit: too slow...
I totally disagree with this idea. I think players fouling out is why OT games are more fun to watch. I remembered a game in the early 90's where Kersey, Drexler had fouled out and the game went to overtime. Porter took over the game and pulled it out for us. Heros are born when situations like these happen. It only makes your team stronger. The more crutches you give players, the weaker they are, IMO.
I think you should be able to have guys stay in the game all they want but any fouls after 5 always send the opponent to the line and gives them an extra free throw. You wanna keep your stars on the floor? Fine, but you risk giving up a ton of free throws.
I totally disagree with your disagreement. I think refs being able to affect whether or not the best players are on the floor gives them too much power already; being able to reduce that power in OT situations--the most highly-charged, clutch situations around--would take some of the power away from the league, and give it back to the players where it belongs.
I think this rule is already in play, Howard got about 8 fouls last night just didn't show up on the stat sheet
So bitter for a fan whose team won the game. Just imagine how grumpy you'd be if the refs had called that final foul correctly...
Hey my friend! I'm not bitter at all, in fact I'm thrilled, having watched playoffs since the 70's I know superstars get away with fouling at the end of playoff games, and traveling. Howard clearly traveled and pushed off repeatedly in the second half last night but we got the win and I'm celebrating today. It's not personal, Shaq got those same calls for years.
No way. If you're tied after 48 minutes, it's time to let things fall where they may. It's also time for some new lineups. Besides, why should a player get extra fouls? Usually, one team loses a star but not both teams. That's an incentive to avoid sloppy playing during regulation.
