Someone on Reddit suggested a lower seeded team has never swept their opponent in the first round in any major sport. That seems unlikely, can anyone try to rule the truth on this?
Mutombo and the Nuggets did it against Payton and the Sonics. EDIT: Mags corrected me. It was not a sweep. My bad.
No they did not. That's back when the 1st round was best-of-5. Seattle won the first two, then Denver took the next three. That ain't no sweep, FAMS!
No. Grizz won in 6. Gary Neal hit a huge three to save Spurs in Game 5. No. Sonics won first two games and then the Nuggets won three straight.
The Nuggets/Sonics series was one of my favorites of all time. No 8 seed had ever won and the Nuggets were down 0-2 in the best of 5. When Denver won game 5 (it was a best of 5), my brother and I ran outside and into the street to celebrate. THEN- Denver fell down 0-3 to Utah and actually came back to force a Game 7 where they unfortunateky lost. They almost made history twice. Robert Pack was so good that year. And Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf), Brian Williams (Bison Dele), and LaPhonso Ellis. Ellis was so good, my brother bought his jersey. 1994 Playoffs was one of my favorite of all time. Pacers reached game 7 of ECF from the 5 seed. Reggie Miller had his huge 4th quarter in Game 5. Also, 8th seeded Heat almost upset 1 seeded Atlanta. And the Finals went seven games. Great playoffs.
No. NY has never swept Miami. And Miami only lost as 1 seed once. It was 1999 and the Knicks won in Game 5 (best of 5) on an Allan Houston shot that bounced around on the rim before it fell. Knicks went on to reach NBA Finals where they lost to the Spurs in 5.
