Ever since Jason Garrett took over as Cowboys coach midway through 2010, he’s built his team with what he calls “the right kind of guys.”

The Cowboys believe defensive end Demarcus Lawrence – their second-round pick Friday – fits that description despite a shaky background at Boise State.

Lawrence served three one-game suspensions in his two years at Boise State for unspecified violations of team rules.

Lawrence said Friday teams that interviewed him asked him the most about his suspensions.

“They just asked me if I put the BS and the suspensions behind me; my childish behaviors,” Lawrence said. “I let all the teams know that I put my childish behaviors behind me and I’ve moved on and it’s time for me to become a Cowboy. It’s time for me to grow up and do my duties and play football.”

Lawrence started his college football career at Butler Community College in Kansas because of academic issues. He redshirted his first year in junior college, played one season for Butler and then transferred to Boise State.

Lawrence said his father sent him far away to Boise State to “prepare me for this time in my life, being away from home and family, learning how to become a man on my own.”

Lawrence excelled on the blue turf but landed in the coaches’ doghouse because of his issues off the field.

Garrett said the Cowboys’ staff did their homework on Lawrence and feel like his maturity issues are behind him.
