But they failed at commercializing those ideas. So you are saying that Xerox would have invented the internet and someone (we'll call him "Steve") would have stolen the idea and popularized it? Read the constitution time. It mentions the D in DARPA quite a bit. But Xerox or Samsung or MicroSoft or America Online or Compuserve might have made some money connecting computers ver long distances. My bad... They did! Almost all the internet infrastructure I know of was built by companies like Pac Bell, MCI, Sprint, AT&T, Cisco, and Sun Microsystems. And many more.
There were multiple proposals active. My research group had one. The internet did not come about from only one source activity.
