I see everyone has their undies in a bunch over Joe Biden using that word. Shylocks, maybe but when did Orient become no no? http://www.mediaite.com/online/joe-biden-refers-to-asia-as-the-orient/
Yep, Orient North Carolina is still on the map. I guess they have not been shamed into changing the name. That's good, it is a neat little town on the Sound.
Let see, it was nearly 50 years ago, I played on a Football team back East. The Name of the team was the Mc's and Wop's. If you think that is bad, you wouldn't believe the the names of some of the other teams in the league. I don't think it would work in this PC world.
Because this is 2014, and not 1950? Because there is actually a term for the individual areas instead of just labeling them 1 generic name?
If I'm remembering the memo right, its more that we describe areas as "ME" that actually aren't "ME". Not sure anyone says ME isn't appropriate anymore (for areas that actually ARE "ME"). I think a better example would be calling all people of the former Soviet Union as "Ruskies" or "Reds" (tho not on the same level as "Orientals"). It's too generic and general of a term to use anymore. I *think* the guy Biden was referring to (if I'm thinking of the right reference?) was Chinese, right? It's not that hard to know that people haven't referred to that area as the "Orient" in a long time. Especially if you're the Vice President. At least, one would hope.
