Thibodeau is famously demanding of his players. Like the smart man he is, one of the first things he did when he joined the Bulls was form a strong relationship with Rose. Rose gave Thibodeau the same thing Jordan gave PJax...a superstar who was the hardest worker on the team. Thibodeau in return unflinchingly had Rose's back, defending him against all critics.

This preseason has a little different vibe to it.

That's not exactly speaking with one voice nor is it likely to force Rose's teammates to meet Thibodeau's expectations of them.

In fact, when Rose was asked if Thibodeau's relentless demands grow tiresome, he replied

    Hmm.

For the most part, Thibodeau is speaking in generalities

However, it seems his chief concern is the Rose, and to a lesser extent Noah

No wonder Thibodeau has repeatedly said

    You got that right, Tom.

I haven't seen any evidence of a particularly strong relationship between Thibs and Rose.

Or Rose and management in general.

    Reggie. Reggie. Reggie.

DRose loved Coach Calipari when he was at Memphis, but in 2011, Rose said this about Thibodeau:

Sounds to me like evidence of a pretty good coach-player relationship.

Thibs doesn't seem like the kind of guy you realy bond with. I think his greatest asset as a coach is his reputation of being a defensive mastermind. Mentally, for the players, they respect him for his hard work. I just don't see him as a buddy buddy kinda guy. Not saying he and Rose don't confide in each other, they most likely communicate with each other, but the tone of voice isn't parental, more...business.

The team president hasn't punched him yet, so he does have that going for him.

I do think Thibs is a players' coach, but it's hard to see anyone putting in the kind of time Thibs demands.

I get that he doesn't want to use the first several regular season games to establish his rotation.

It seems like management should let him do his thing or find someone else.

Management should give him clear direction with regard to how he is to steward their assets, and within those parameters, let him do his thing. If this leads to positive results, there's no need to find someone else. Of course once he's coached out his contract, he may choose to do his thing elsewhere.

Agree that Thibodeau and Rose were never buddy-buddy and that their relationship was a business one and based on shared goals and principles. I'm saying that it appears that their relationship isn't as strong as it once was. It's not a good thing for your superstar to declare that he's become numb to your way of doing business. The thing is, I'm not sure Rose still qualifies as a superstar.

The hope for all Bulls fans is that, as Thibodeau hopes, head coach and players get on the same page ASAP. If the players should "tune out" Thibodeau, not only is Thibodeau a goner, but so is this season.

    Then Pax should coach.

Good management empowers its employees, they don't handcuff them.

They're handcuffing him. He's griping about it publicly.

CHICAGO -- Tom Thibodeau coaches every second of every game as if it were his last. The Chicago Bulls coach expects the same intensity from his players. He believes he knows how to pace a team after spending more than two decades on an NBA sideline. He doesn't believe in resting players unless they are injured -- and as he has said many times over the years, there is a difference between being hurt and being injured. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise the veteran coach bristled before Monday's game when the topic of injuries came up.

"The only way you can guarantee a guy not getting hurt is don't play him," Thibodeau said. "Don't practice him. Don't play him. Don't play him in the preseason. Don't play him in the regular season. Just don't play him. He won't get hurt."

After dealing with Derrick Rose's various injuries over the past three seasons, Thibodeau has empathy for what other coaches are going through with the rash of injuries that has struck the NBA this preseason, but he knows those setbacks are "just part of the game."

"[Kevin] Durant [injured his foot] in practice from what I've read," Thibodeau continued. "[Injuries] happen at different times. So usually, if it's a broken bone, it's probably the result of a collision. It's body-on body contact. It's physical out there."

Thibodeau wasn't done. He referenced the team he has repeatedly called the "gold standard" of the NBA to back up his point about being able to give players more minutes.

"As I said, there's different approaches," he said. "You look at San Antonio, they played late and obviously, they won it. But when I'm looking at their box scores, I watched a little bit of their game, I think it's a strong message what they're saying right now. They're preparing themselves to defend their championship. And so in order to get that away from them, you're going to have to wrestle it away from them. They ain't just going to give it away. And so, I think your mindset has to be right.

"They say [Tim] Duncan never leaves the gym. When you look at great players, that's usually when you read about guys who have achieved something great. It's usually them getting past adversity, them making great effort and their readiness to accept the challenge. I think you need a great commitment from your team if you want to do something special. That commitment has to start at the beginning, and it has to remain throughout."

Do you think Thibodeau should be able to overrule the team's medical staff?

If the player suits up, he should be able to play him as he sees fit.

As he says, there's a difference between "hurt" and "injured."

He's been around the game as a coach for like 30 years, he probably knows a thing or two about these things.

Did you know he coached the Harvard basketball team?

I think it depends on the history of said player and his prior injuries.

Just trying to stick to the Crane/opposition, transplant/management stereotypes.
