Officials at Yale University said on Thursday that a graduate student who had recently returned from Liberia was being treated in isolation as a “suspected case” of Ebola, though they said they had no medical evidence that the patient had contracted the deadly disease. The student was admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital on Wednesday night after developing “Ebola-like symptoms,” including a fever, the officials said. Richard D’Aquila, the hospital’s chief operating officer, said the hospital had tested the patient for Ebola and expected to receive the results of that test within 24 hours. Dr. Thomas J. Balcezak, chief medical officer for the hospital, said the hospital was using “an abundance of caution” in treating the patient, whom Dr. Balcezak declined to identify. He said the patient had been placed in a room with “negative pressure” to prevent the air from circulating to other parts of the hospital. The hospital also is trying to limit the number of doctors and nurses who come in contact with the patient, he said.
