I know Drob is a very good 8th inn guy...and that's where I'm thinking - I absolutely will NOT pay Drob 15 mil to be a closer...or anything. The Yanks should've offered LESS or let him walk and put the money towards a free agent pitcher (?) Lester..Max? Any hint about what the Yanks' plans are for Betances? (closer) I would just make the commitment to Betances as the closer, get that kid Lindgren up here and fill in the rest of the pen with another kid or two from the system and/or possibly Andrew Miller. Just do it!
_______________________________ And what about Mark Montgomery? 24 years old with good numbers IN RELIEF at AA/AAA He'll be 25 before next season is over....how long? HOW FREEKIN LONG before this kid gets a nice look-see at the big level? What does he have to do, have a 0.00 era and avg 3k per IP? I'm not saying he's going to be a savior, nor do I expect it. We watched bums like Daley and Aceves log innings when a couple of other kids such as Montgomery could be getting a nice little taste of ML experience. It's almost scandalous.
^^^Monty still has not rebounded enough from the shoulder problems of last year. He struggled with both control and loss of velocity.
If D-rob turns down that much of a qualifying offer fine , let him walk. On the other hand if he can accept a role change in conjunction with fair settlement of time and salary he can stay. The man was flat out scary in late inning situations against teams that the Yankees had to beat.
He will need a minus -0.10 ERA, with an average of 4 K's per inning, and 32 K's minimum per game. He shall allow no more than one hit per 9 IP. He must throw a Perfecto, and 3 No-No's per season......J/K....
BTW- 32 K's per 8 IP, ie. That leaves the 9th inning for Betances..... You know K 3 batters, per 1 IP; have one of those 3 reach base on a passed strike 3. Then face another.....
Seems like the era of Baseball Players has become a endangered species. Today the majority of players are actually "Commodities"....sad its become a Big Business. No more Willie Mays quotes: "I can't believe they pay me to do what I love to do the best, play baseball".... I will never forget that line by the Great Willie...!!!
Unfortunately those feelings are long gone. I mean just look at last season when Scherzer turned down 144M for 6 years. $24 fucking million dollars a year. What....not enough? I would love to see more of what happened to the basketball player Latrell Spreewell several years back. I think it was the Knicks that offered him $21M over 3 years & he turned it down saying & I quote, "I can't take care of my family on $7M a year" & his reward for that stupidity, no one I repeat NO ONE picked him up & his career was over. I loved it.
Saw the Costas interview with Willie on MLB 42 a couple days ago. Heard Willie state in an interview that he was most proud that his baseball career was accomplished with his own body. The man rated right up there with the best.
There was very little the man couldn't do on a baseball field. He was also quoted as saying several years back, "If I had known that having a 30/30 year (HRs & SBs) was going to be such a big deal, I'd have done it every year". And I believe he would have. I've no doubt that he could have been the 1st 40/40 guy.
I totally forgot about the infamous Latrell Spreewell debacle. Thanks for the reminder Rick, and laughter too. Imagine being an owner and hearing "I can't raise my Family on $7 Mil a year". I'd think what, can't raise your family on 7 MIl, did he forget where he came from, and how his family long before basketball, had to live on Food Stamps? Or- could he not feed his family with outrageous pay checks, cuz he had a nose candy problem....? The guy obviously had some serious head case probs, one reason I think no one wanted him after his ignorant remark.... the emoticons are indicative of Spreewell's lavish family lifestyle. Family doesn't include 100 posse buddies, or hangers on....like so many athletes with their entourages; ie, M. Vick, Pac Man Jones, Ray Lewith, M. Tyson, et al. I wouldn't even blame the NBA Club Owners if they had collusion with each other, to ensure Spreewell never got another contract. Other than coaching Parks and Recreation YMCA teams. But then, honestly, Latrell was the last person I'd ever want around my kid, or any other kids.
