The sides still have until midnight EST on Friday to reach agreement on a 2011 draft class rookie extension, but Bulls officials expressed to Butler and his reps at Relativity Media, Walters and Steve McCaskill, that they made their final offer earlier on Monday.

“All the [rookie extension] deals done so far have shown that teams are building around their stars of the future, and they’re compensating those players as such,” Walters told Yahoo Sports on Friday. “I was under the impression Jimmy was also viewed as one of those future building blocks with the Bulls.

“We tried like heck to get something done, but ultimately, the Bulls wanted a ‘hometown’ discount. While understandable, I doubt their GM or coaches give Mr. Reinsdorf a discount when negotiating their own deals.”

I hope someone doesn't do us the way Hst did with Asik. We said all along we would match.

    We need Butler.

So, yeah, if Jimmy is able to sustain this level of play he's going to be an all star, a max contract guy this off season and probably the second best shooting guard in the league.

    Is this for real?

Can a player go from shooting .397 one season to .533 the next?

Well, Butler's play this season sure doesn't look flukey to me. I wasn't a believer 3 weeks ago, but I'm coming around. Butler's a beast out there.

Sure looks like Jimmy's getting paid.

Oddly, he's playing a lot of SF when Brooks and youknowho are the guards.

Dunleavy? I have seen Dunleavy playing a lot of shooting guard this season.

If Jimmy keeps putting up 22/6/8 kind of numbers, along with his defense, he'd easily be one of the best players the Bulls have EVER had. Those numbers are Pippen/Jordan kind of numbers (Pippen mostly, though).

No, I'm not saying he's as good as Pippen. Yet. He'd have to have several seasons of roughly 7/7 (rebounds/assists) before I'd say that.

However, 3rd behind Pippen and Jordan, could well be. That includes Rose.

So far I don't think Jimmy's numbers are a fluke. I think there are two things that might slow him down:

1). Lower usage when (if) everyone's healthy.

2). The minutes might eventually get to him by the end of the year.

He played 45 minutes in a game that wasn't in doubt for most of Q3 and all of Q4.

Pippen averaged 36 minutes/game for 10 straight seasons. He averaged over 37 in 8 of those. Over 38 in 5.

    Jimmy's PER is currently 22.6.

Pippen had a 22.6 or better PER twice in his career.

Jimmy is averaging 21.6 PPG. Pippen scored more than 21.6 once in his career.

    Of course Pippen's appeared in 7 all-star games to Jimmy's 0. He's won 6 championships to Jimmy's 0. He's a 9 time nba all-defensive 1st team player, Jimmy's made 2nd team once. Pippen also made 1st/2nd/3rd team all-nba 7 times.

Jimmy is "only" averaging 3.9 APG and Pippen was the Bulls PG and leader in APG for many seasons. As I said, he'd have to continue having nights like last night with more than 4 assists to be Pippen-lite. For now.

There can be no doubt that Jimmy will need to play more than 11 good games to be considered on the same level as Pippen.

FWIW I also think they're very different players. Pippen was a PG in a SF's body. Jimmy is a PF in a SG's body. To me Jimmy looks more like prime Barkley than prime Pippen. He's turning into what Corey Maggette could've been.

To me he looks like Lu with a 3pt shot, and he doesn't look at his feet when he dribbles. He's not standing at the 3pt line like last year. He's driving to the basket like Lu did and he's posting up smaller players. He's also getting a lot of foul shots.

To me Lu and Jimmy are very different players.

Lu played with a higher motor on both offense and defense.

Lu was better off the ball on offense and defense, but especially offense.

Lu was a better rebounder for his position.

Jimmy has a better post-up game and a much better game going to the basket.

Jimmy has a better handle, although it's still middle of the road for a starting SG.

Jimmy's a much better fast twitch athlete and finished at the rim. Jimmy can finish through people and get off the ground quick and high on his first jump, something Lu could never do.
