http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/14/o...legalize-sports-betting.html?ref=opinion&_r=1 N.B.A. Commissioner Adam Silver: Allow Gambling on Pro Games By ADAM SILVER Nov. 13, 2014 There is an obvious appetite among sports fans for a safe and legal way to wager on professional sporting events. Mainstream media outlets regularly publish sports betting lines and point spreads. Voters in New Jersey overwhelmingly voiced their support for legal sports betting in a 2011 referendum. Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey recently signed a bill authorizing sports betting at local casinos and horse racetracks, a law the N.B.A. and other leagues have opposed — and a federal court has blocked — because it violates Paspa. Outside of the United States, sports betting and other forms of gambling are popular, widely legal and subject to regulation. In England, for example, a sports bet can be placed on a smartphone, at a stadium kiosk or even using a television remote control. In light of these domestic and global trends, the laws on sports betting should be changed. Congress should adopt a federal framework that allows states to authorize betting on professional sports, subject to strict regulatory requirements and technological safeguards.
Pretty radical for a major league commissioner to come out in favor of gambling. Baseball got its first commissioner because of a gambling scandal.
I don't know. It seems all too easily manipulated. But then again placing a bet on a game is not all that hard really. Just ask Pete Rose.
I just watched the documentary on Boston College's point shaving scandal with the mob in the 70's on netflix. Makes me wonder how legalizing gambling in the NBA would affect refs and players. Could be opening a real can of worms. I fear some kid's college fund is going to be gambled away but I'm not a gambler, so there's that.
Organized betting is no different than buying meth. Either way you are financing murder, slavery, and a host of other heinous crimes.
Disgraced ref Donaghy is out of jail and running a sports betting website right now. That tells you something
if there is a game between Milwaukee and detroit, the 3 largest tv audiences will be in Milwaukee, detroit, and las vegas. basically, if you are betting on a shit game with shit teams, you are probably going to watch it. more eyeballs, more ad $$$.
Gambling on sports is a HUGE market and if the NBA thinks it can get a piece of that market why wouldn't they want that? Unfortunately it will lead to tons and tons of conspiracy theory's and overall feels like this is a black whole the sport could go down and not recover from since so many people think its already rigged.
