Thibodeau continues to praise the rookies. "Their time will come," he said. Emphasized how diligent they are in film study after mistakes.

My concern over the rookies minutes loads is not about the rookies themselves, but the stress it may put on the rest of the roster. As far as rookie development, it is way, way damn early. Thibodeau has shown he's good at this.

I'm glad to hear Thibodeau continue his positive approach with these guys 'cause they're important to both the Bulls long-term and near-term future. As for me, I've been disappointed, but it's a self-inflicted wound.

Although it rhymes, plays != praise.

I don't think the situation with the rookies has reached the point where anyone should be alarmed, either with the rookies or with Thibodeau.

The season's early, we have a veteran team, Thibs has a good record with player development, and despite their many gaffe's they've also shown a lot of good signs.

For reference here's the current MPG of the first round in this year's draft:

    Andrew Wiggins - 27.4
    Jabari Parker - 28.7
    Joel Embiid - 0 (injury)
    Aaron Gordon - 15.1
    Dante Exum - 19.1
    Marcus Smart - 20.4
    Julius Randle - 14 (1 game)
    Nik Stauskas - 16
    Noah Vonleh - 0
    Elfrid Payton - 27.5
    Doug McDermott - 12.7
    Dario Saric - 0 (foreign)
Zach Lavine - 20.3 (DNP-CD in 4 of them. Didn't play until Rubio got injured).
    TJ Warren - 0
    Adreian Payne 0
    Jusuf Nurkic - 9.6
    James Young - 4.5
    Tyler Ennis - 9
    Gary Harris - 18 (1 game)
    Bruno Caboclo - 0
    Mitch McGary - 0 (injury)
    Jordan Adams - 1
    Shabazz Napier - 20.3
    PJ Hairston - 0
    Bogdan Bogdanovic - 0
    CJ Wilcox - 0
    Josh Huestis - 0
Kyle Anderson - 14 (most of this is due to 31 minutes played in 1 blowout when other starters were resting)

No one's averaging over 30, 6 are averaging over 20, and 10 either haven't seen the court at all or played less than 1 game or 20 total minutes this season.

Of the guys over 20, all of them are on young unproven developing teams that don't have expectations of making the playoffs.

I think if there's one damning comp it'd be Shabazz Napier, who's in a similar situation to Doug and Nikola in Miami, and he's getting 20 mpg and doing well with it.

For many, Stauskas is "the one who got away" when the Kings took him at #8. Though I'm not a big PER guy, Stauskas's 3.7 PER kind of says that Nik ain't exactly setting the world on fire either.

Gary Harris and Rodney Hood are who I'd have wanted with 16 and 19.

Yeah, but that's you. We can't expect that sort of scouting from NBA teams.

They both went close enough to 16,19. They were both frequently mentioned as Bulls draft targets. They're both young and fill positions of need. It's also not clear there were better players at 16,19.

I don't remember any link between Bulls and Stauskas. He was expected to be long gone by our picks. He was gone by the time we drafted in Denver's position.

    But whatever.

If we kept the picks and took Harris and Hood I would've been happy.

I think it's important to keep in mind that from a +/- perspective rookies are almost never very good, including the ones that are statistically prolific. This probably means more to a coach on a contending team than a developing one since there's more at stake if your play puts the team in a bind.

At one time, DraftExpress.com, the best NBA draft site for my money, had Stauskas going to the Bulls at #16. However, Stauskas just kept on climbing up the boards. I'd've been happy with Harris and Hood. If McDermott doesn't turn out to be at least a #3 offensive option type player, it'll be fair to say that it was a miss.

Our options really were pretty good with those two picks. I've watched Nurkic this year and think he's impressive as a prospect. He's got a huge body and has enough pop to his game to make him interesting. Raw as hell though. Hood, Harris,Tyler Ennis, KJ McDaniels, Kyle Anderson, Mitch McGary and James Young were all available too and I would've been fine with all of those guys.

    June 16

He might not be around when the Bulls go on the clock at No. 16. The Bulls' need for a scorer at shooting guard has been well-documented during the Derrick Rose Era, at least since the departure of Ben Gordon. Low-scoring defensive specialists such as Keith Bogans, Ronnie Brewer and Kirk Hinrich have served in big roles, and even current starter Jimmy Butler (who's also shown the ability to play small forward) isn't known for his shooting skills. If he's still around come the No. 16 pick, could Stauskas be the answer?

FWIW, when Glenn Robinson III was slipping in the 2nd, I was hoping the Bulls would trade up and snag him, too.

Ha, so I'm one of those people who possesses the keen eye for talent that so many others lack (Denny, that's you) who wishes that the Bulls would have chased Stauskas, if they had the opportunity.

My excuse? Stauskas was drafted by Sacramento. No one survives Sacramento. Boogie Cousins would have been the best center in the league three years earlier if he was drafted almost anywhere else.
