Foxcatcher, staring Steve Carell as John Eleuthère du Pont, and Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo as Mark and Dave Schultz, has a very direct connection to the UFC--Mark fought at UFC 9. Spoilers ahead The Schultz brothers won more NCAA, U.S. Open, World, and Olympic titles than any American brother combination in history. In 1984 in Los Angeles, Mark and Dave both won Olympic gold medals. The Schultz brothers became involved with erratic millionaire philanthropist John du Pont who, in 1996, shot and killed Dave under mysterious circumstances. Only months later Mark opted to compete at UFC 9 where he defeated Gary Goodridge via TKO (cut). Schultz injured his back in the fight and has suffered chronic pain from it ever since. He retired from MMA following the bout. UFC 9 is infamous in it's own right. Senator John McCain had been vigorously campaigning against the NHB nature of the UFC, leading to the company fighting to put on the event in a Detroit courtroom up to 4:30pm that afternoon. The UFC prevailed but the court ordered special rules be implemented in order for the event to proceed, including banning closed fist striking and headbutts. Then UFC chair Bob Meyrowitz agreed to the terms knowing he could do little to ensure their implementation. Head referee John McCarthy advised the fighters before the event of the rule changes but they went unheeded (and subsequently unpunished).
