President Barack Obama is about to flex his muscles on immigration — perhaps, skeptics believe, past the breaking point.

As chief of the executive branch, Obama enjoys considerable authority to act on his own in certain areas, including national security and immigration. His predecessors, Republicans and Democrats alike, have employed similar powers.

But as the representative of only one of three co-equal branches of the federal government, Obama also faces legal and political constraints on his freedom of action. This tension, between unilateral executive authority and multilateral collaboration, will escalate the minute Obama takes action.

Bottom line: Obama can probably do what he wants.

Can he? What do you think?

Bachmann: Obama turning ‘illiterate’ immigrants into Democratic voters

In a sign of the difficulties GOP leaders face in keeping their unruly caucus on-message, retiring tea party firebrand Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said Wednesday that the immigrants given new protections by the president could become “illiterate” Democratic voters.

“The social cost will be profound on the U.S. taxpayer — millions of unskilled, illiterate, foreign nationals coming into the United States who can’t speak the English language,” Bachmann told reporters at the Capitol. “Even though the president says they won’t be able to vote, we all know that many, in all likelihood, will vote.”

Bachmann added: “The president has a very single-minded vision. He’s looking at new voters for 2016.... People do vote without being a citizen. It’s a wink and a nod, we all know it’s going to happen."

That certainly is one way of thinking. And one could argue that is exactly why the House has not voted on a passed bill from the Senate in the many months it was there. So yes Obama wants voters! Yet it appears the other party wants to stifle the electorate. Or the very least keep it from jumping big time in the short term.

Both parties are using politics on this and not looking at fixing a problem.

Obama's immigration move is a win

President Obama finally did it. Through an executive order, the President intends to grant up to 5 million undocumented immigrants relief from deportation

Will the angry bulls rise up? Has the well been poisoned? Will Republicans follow through on their threats of government shutdowns because they consider this an "impeachable offense"?

Republicans, who now have a responsibility to prove that they can govern, should take a step back and see what the President is trying to achieve and then decide whether it's worth expending political capital to battle over.

The President's Executive Action on deferring deportations for noncriminal undocumented immigrants who have been in the country for many years and contributed to our society will achieve three major goals:
