The accidental killing of 28-year-old Akai Gurley by a rookie cop is rife with *apparent protocol breaches, veteran cops and NYPD critics agreed Saturday.

Officer Peter Liang — a probationary cop with only 18 months on the job — and his partner, fellow rookie Shaun Landau, were on routine patrol at the crime-plagued Louis H. Pink Houses project in East New York, Brooklyn, Thursday night when they came upon Gurley and his girlfriend, *Melissa Butler, in the stairwell.

Liang, 27, fired off one “accidental” shot that struck the young father of two in the chest, killing him, cops said.

“The strong assumption is that *[Liang] had his finger on the trigger” as he and Landau, who did not draw his weapon, conducted a “vertical patrol” of the stairwell, according to a law-enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation.
