Former WWE wrestling champion Phil CM Punk Brooks has signed with the UFC. He intends to pursue MMA as a career, not as a one-off. He will fight at middleweight or welterweight and will announce his team in the coming days. His debut is TBA. Brooks has been training BJJ with the Gracies for a few years. The 36-year old iconoclast had a fast rise and fall in professional wrestling, earning the admiration of fans disenchanted with the status quo in the sport but drawing the ire of upper management. He was fired from the UFC on the eve of his wedding earlier this year.
I imagine there will be a thousand guys lining up to fight him. James Toney at least had an amazing fighting pedigree. Brooks is a weekend warrior?
Wrong side of 35? Check. Years of wear-and-tear from pro wrasslin'? Check. Impressive amateur credentials (eg Lesnar and Lashley)? Nope. Impressive raw physical talent (eg Lesnar and Lashley)? Nope. Maybe 10 years ago in Pride. Maybe.
http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Alberto-Rodriguez-2269 Hmm. Dos Caras Jr did better than I thought. He was a lot younger, however.
Nonetheless. It should be entertaining watching punk give it a go. Should add some sonnenesque trash talk too I'm sure
I'm looking forward to seeing him fight. I don't have high expectations for him but I am curious to see how he fares.
It will be interesting to see how punk fairs. We have seen our fair share of giants, lesnar, Batista and lashley give mma a shot, and we sa shamrock make the conversion to wrasslin, now it's time to see if a smaller guy will fail or succeed
I have never seen this guy wrassle... so my interest is mild at best. They'll likely give him a co-main event slot to sell PPV's. The big trick will be if he can take a punch or not. Regardless I imagine Dana will give him a grappler so Phil can get a win or two and continue to sell PPV's. If he does win... get ready for the onslaught of 'Dive! Dive!' and "FIXED!" outcries on the internet by hard core MMA fans who hate DFW.
Chael Sonnen claims to know who the opponent will be, says it isn't a bottom-tier guy, and that it is someone who will be a heavy favourite (to beat Brooks).
Probably, Franklin hasn't fought in over 2 years though and this would be a pretty high profile fight PPV wise.
