Cristiano Ronaldo's attempt to score against Cruz Azul at the Club World Cup with a rabona caused a bit of a stir in Mexico. Fox Sports commentator Raul Orvananos described the Real Madrid forward as a "clown" and although he issued an apology later (to Real fans, if not the player) he refused to alter his appraisal and went on to say that Ronaldo's trickery was tantamount to making fun of the Mexican side, who were 3-0 down at the time. It's an opinion that Orvananos is not alone in holding: In recent seasons there has been plenty of handwringing at the lack of "respect" shown to teams on the wrong end of a score line. Southampton manager Ronald Koeman accused Sheffield United of a similar affront as his side lost in the League Cup quarterfinals during the week. Firstly, it misses the entire point of football as a spectacle, and secondly, if the players on the receiving end aren't impressed by a bit of showboating, they have their own recourse to punitive action, as Manchester United's Nani discovered after his "seal dribble" against Arsenal.
