Breaking news: Facebook is losing popularity points, at least among teens. A new study released Thursday Dec. 18 the by Frank N. Magid Associates company shows that the number of social-media users age 13 to 17 using Facebook in the U.S is decreasing.

While in 2012, Facebook was used by 95 percent of American teens, numbers started to slowly diminish, hitting to 94 percent in 2013 and finally 88 percent in 2014. The study also showed that while Facebook was getting “uncool”, Twitter and various messaging applications got hold of a few popularity points this year.

Although Mark Zuckerberg’s creation and its accompanying messaging application are used more frequently than any other rival sites, the dominant age group consists of an older generation, users younger than 37 representing only 55 percent. In comparison, the same category represents 86 percent out of the total number of Snapchat users. Also, 83 percent of the people using Kik Interactive are 37 or younger. Facebook tried to buy Snapchat for more than $ 3 billion the previous year but was bluntly refused.
