<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Bengals release veteran safety HerringBy Len PasquarelliESPN.comVeteran safety Kim Herring, who missed the entire 2005 season with a shoulder injury suffered in a preseason game last Aug. 28, was released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday afternoon. The move, which had been anticipated since the Bengals signed unrestricted free agent Dexter Jackson three weeks ago, saved the Bengals about $700,000 in 2006 salary cap charges.Herring, 30, played in Super Bowl XXXV with the Baltimore Ravens in 2000 and Super Bowl XXXVI with the St. Louis Rams in 2001. He signed a five-year contract with the Bengals in 2004 after he was released by the Rams for salary cap considerations. In his first season in Cincinnati, he appeared in 12 games, started in 10, and registered 49 tackles. His play versus the run was particularly impressive and he teamed with then-rookie Madieu Williams to give the Bengals a pair of physical safeties. But both Herring and Williams went down with season-ending shoulder injuries in 2005 and the defense against the run suffered, as the Bengals statistically ranked just 20th in that category.Williams is nearly fully rehabilitated and should regain his starting role. Jackson, who signed a four-year contract, figures to supplant Herring as the starting strong safety.A nine-year veteran, Herring has 435 career tackles, eight interceptions, 32 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and two recoveries. He is at his best playing close to the line of scrimmage but, before injuries slowed him, had enough range to play free safety at times.Having missed two of the last three seasons because of injuries, including a broken left forearm in 2003, Herring will have to demonstrate to any teams interested in him that he is healthy again. The former Penn State star was scheduled to have a base salary of $1.2 million for 2006, $1.4 million in 2007, and $1.5 million in 2008 under the Bengals contract that was terminated on Friday afternoon.Len Pasquarelli is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com.</div>--Sounds like they may draft one.

Herring is a good safety, one of the few on the Bengals last year
