<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea on Monday claimed it has performed a successful nuclear test, according to that country's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

South Korean government officials also said North Korea performed its first nuclear test, the South's Yonhap news agency reported.

The apparent nuclear test was conducted at 10:36 a.m. (1:36 a.m. GMT) in Hwaderi near Kilju city, Yonhap reported, citing defense officials.

"The field of scientific research in the DPRK (North Korea's official name) successfully conducted an underground nuclear test under secure conditions on October 9 ... at a stirring time when all the people of the country are making a great leap forward in the building of a great prosperous powerful socialist nation," KCNA reported.

In Washington, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said, "We can't confirm independently, although we're aware of the reports."

A senior U.S. official said China was given a 20-minute warning ahead of the test and in turn told the United States, Japan and South Korea about getting the advance notice.

A U.S. military official told CNN that "something clearly has happened," but the Pentagon was working to fully confirm the report.

Other senior U.S. officials said they also believed the test took place, citing seismic data that appears to show one.

The U.S. Geological Survey Web site recorded a light 4.2-magnitude earthquake in North Korea at 10:35 a.m., about 385 kilometers (240 miles) northeast of the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

South Korean intelligence officials said a seismic wave of magnitude-3.58 had been detected in North Hamkyung province, according to Yonhap.

"The nuclear test was conducted with indigenous wisdom and technology 100 percent. It marks a historic event as it greatly encouraged and pleased the KPA (Korean People's Army) and people that have wished to have powerful self-reliant defense capability," KCNA reported.

"It will contribute to defending the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the area around it."

North Korea's closest ally, China, said on Monday it firmly opposed North Korea's reported nuclear test, and denounced the development as "brazen."

China also demanded Pyongyang stop any action that would worsen the situation, Reuters news service reports.

"The DPRK has ignored the widespread opposition of the international community and conducted a nuclear test brazenly on October 9," China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its Web site.

"The Chinese government is firmly opposed to this," the statement said.

In Tokyo, the prime minister's office said Japan had set up a task force to address the situation.

Chief government spokesman Yasuhisa Shiozaki said if a nuclear test was confirmed, Japan would "strongly protest" it.

High-level South Korean officials were meeting Monday after intelligence of the suspected test was received.

"President Roh Moo-hyun called in an emergency meeting of related ministers on Monday to discuss the North Korean nuclear issue," said Yonhap, quoting Foreign Ministry spokesman Choo Kyu-ho.

"The meeting comes as there has been a grave change in the situation involving the North's nuclear activity."

According to KCNA, there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

On Friday, the U.N. Security Council warned North Korea against performing a nuclear test, citing unspecified action if it should do so.

It also called on North Korea to return immediately to the six-party talks with China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.</div>

fyi-north korea immersed themselves in nuclear technology after an energy crunch in the 90's as a consequence of the embargo's which diverted oil away from them. proof that embargo's are draconian and engagement is always better.

I agree that our school system is not the most efficient, however do you think the average person today in North America has a larger vocabulary than 2000, 1500, 1000 years ago, 500 years ago, 200 years ago, and 100 years ago?

There are more factors than the school system alone, as well as how eager people are to learn about vocabulary and whatever subjects available.

The school system probably isn't as efficient as it could be, but its run by people and any government run or private institution will have flaws, but the general public in N.A. today I'm sure has a greater level of education than the average person of probably all countries prior to 1700 AD. So its good the general public is receiving this.

What energy crunch? China has been providing them ever since Russia stopped. N. Korea's approach to politics is obsolete, and the only people who will feel the suffering are the people of N. Korea once more sanctions take place.

I understood it, but you could have expressed the same point with more clarity in half the space. Sometimes being concise is harder than using an extensive vocabulary.

come on shape, in no way am i defending kim jong, whatever his name is. lets be realistic- china can't even meet its energy needs let alone north korea?s. that?s why they are hooked on foreign oil, just like us and hence our skyrocketing oil prices. my point is that sanctions rarely work and engagement is the better methodology in diplomacy

Try using capitalization to start sentences. "Vocab" isn't actually a word it is simply a shortened version of the actual word vocabulary lazy people use to skip writing out full sentences. In most junior high school writing levels they wouldn't allow you to write "speak in code in the amidst of morons" you should just shorten it to "speak in code amidst morons? because then it actually makes sense. Also that actually isn't a code and no you cannot use it as a metaphor, sorry. Be sure to use periods and correct spacing when needed. Lastly, be sure to capitalize people?s names such as George Bush and yes he is a moron.

I don?t understand why just about every post you make contains your attempts to ?show off? your ?high vocabulary? and/or ?political knowledge.? Most of the statements you make in the political world are incorrect such as Europe diversities and cultures. I assume you?ve never been abroad. If true I believe it to be wise experiencing something before having an opinion of it isn?t that correct?

A good suggestion would be to settle down, stop with the idiosyncrasy, and try to have a good conversation with good people on this basketball fan forum. You should know or at least try to understand that most people don?t care about using ?bigger words? because they?re not needed in life to succeed. I?m not insulting you in the slightest. I?m just saving everyone the agony of reading your egotistical opinions.

China is not in an energy crisis, where did you get that idea from? Countries are hooked on foreign oil because it's cheaper than it would cost to drill for themselves and there's an greater abundance.

Also oil prices have dropped significantly since summer time. Historically gas price always rise in summer and drop in winter. Oil prices are based on how much the oil companies feel like pumping out. They try to anticipate how much oil will be consumed and base it off that. The cost is then passed on to the gas stations and consumer. So when you buy gas, you're not paying what it currently cost, you're paying what it's going to cost the gas station the next time they need to fill their reserves.

thanks for pointing out my pretentious diction, bravo!!!. u be right on my occasional grammatical mishap, i,e, "speak in code amidst morons" vs. my "speak in code in the amidst of morons". although in defense of myself, i'm usually doing something else while i'm writing like making notes as in tonight. to that end, code= euphemism for the way i presented it. my informal style is catered towards the anything goes, random environment of the forum, in case u were wondering.

btw, culture and diversity is what i said about latin America, not europe. moreover, my cultural designations were as much academic as observational. have i been abroad? lets see i spent a summer in england and france; lived in singapore for 6 months; i've traveled extensively throughout N.A.; i could go on...

i never said china was experiencing an energy crunch. i merely pointed out the obvious- china is desperate for oil just like the rest of us, e.g. their partnership with iran, scoffed at by the rest of the world.

gas prices are set by OPEC who are an economic cartel if there ever was one. what u said was more perception (e.g. trends) than anything; i will concede however that OPEC anticipates market demand and supply on behest of oil companies. nonetheless, its arbitrary price setting, hence the global tyranny of gas prices

for the moderator- i didn't notice shape's post until after my response to the other guy and it wouldn't let me double edit with shape's quote.

Well, all I can say is that it's far more important to bomb all of Afghanistan and Iraq instead of putting any energy/resources into figuring things out with N Korea.

And I'm with you guys, I can't keep a straight face anymore when I see a picture of Kim Jong [IMG]
